It took me forever to run across the nondescript green thingy and then accidentally collide with soil to plant the tree and then accidentally collide with the special hidden wall ... almost gave up on the game. And then it ended anyway! I'm too stupid to understand what's going on in this game. On my first playthrough I just fell right in the first pit and swam around what I thought was an underwater cavern beneath the upper level. I couldn't get back up, and I didn't know why. Then I finished the game. On my second playthrough I got to the boss and died (which I'm guessing is what's supposed to happen? I don't see a way to beat the boss). Only then did I realize that the second underwater cavern is actually the first non-underwtater area... so I guess that means when you're underwater you're actually some sort of, uh... bubble-gun-toting ghost? And when I fell in the first pit the first time, I actually, uh... died and came back to the level at a later date, Soul-Reaver style, like some sort of scuba-diving Raziel? Anyway, I'm confused. About the plot, and the collecting of the nuts, and the fish, and the ending, and... well, everything. It looks and plays really nice though . But I did get a good bit of slowdown when the tree was onscreen.

The style, presentation, polish, music and engine are all incredibly top-notch hi-quality, so kudos all around! (yes, that gentleman has three hands, deal with it!) While everything else was just sorta, "Huh?"

I couldn't FATHOM it either. It was great though. Looking forward to getting my hands on the toolkit!

All I want to know is: are we missing something? Is there more than one ending, or not? I don't want to spend any more time trying to find the other ending if there isn't one.

Hmmm... I am equally clueless as the rest of you. I fell into some water, swam around, collected fish, sound something I would call a Seed, planted it, tree grew........ Is there anything else?
Kick ass atmosphere I must say, the action sequence at the beginning really contrasts the cold depths of the underwater world.

Um... is the green thing supposed to do nothing? I used the green thing on the soil, but nothing happened. Now when I go back to the soil area, the green thing is bobbing at the top of the screen just out of reach.

1st impression: "Hmm this is kinda like megaman, I think I likey"
2nd impression: "Oh hmm a water level, seems kinda mean to make it the second level or recovery level or whatever"
3rd impression: "Swimming around aimlessly, I hope I can get back to the fun part soon"
4th impression: "Found something, hmm it does something here and i can go here. Next level here I come!"
5th impression: "More water? Hmm I guess the intro was just an intro to a water game of sorts. Kinda mean I think"
6th impression: "Going up? Out of water maybe there is another fun part after all!"
7th impression: "WTF that was it?"

I'm calling my next game "STAMPEDE."
stampede and fathom were actually my two favorite atari 2600 games, both of them my aunt bought for me on the same day too. anyway, will try this game soon! apparently it's mostly a water game? i like water games -- lots of people hate underwater levels but those are always my favorites.

My take on the story is that industry and commercialism are destroying the fundamentals of natural beauty and appreciation. Think about it, you start of in a hectic (greenhouse factory?) and then plunge into what appears to be an ancient sunken civilization. The music reflects these themes well imo. Yes, the ending surprised me also, and i was hoping for more shooting action, but it's great for a 10 day game.

"FATHOM" brings whole new meaning to the phrase "I'd rather die than go fishing."
Quite impressive game. Good word play which ties into the theme. We plunge in the depths (fathoms!) and attempt to fathom what our purpose is, what our goals are. Player considers how he knows what to do. Requires dedication to the end, trust in the designer that it all leads somewhere. And the game doesn't disappoint, it merely ends with anticlimax. All quite postmodern. An experiment in semiotics? I think I'll give another run through, attempt to get all the cogs. See if that alters anything.
Think I'll start making games again, or at least try one. Been a while. Make me feel like a kid again. Not doing much else the next two weeks. Incidentally, be in Carthage, MO on the 23rd.
Thank you, Adam and Danny.

Who is this Danny B*, and why have I suddenly seen his name dropped thrice in a week? Also, O Merciful Bullet, I have heard before. Meaning I've heard him somewhere.
*Other than a fantastic musician.
EDIT: I love my fishy friends. That was interesting. And fun! Will there be more?

I got the seed to the planter, and now it's bobbing up and down above my head at the top of the screen. Did I break it?

Planter? Seeds go in the ground. And I don't know.
