The grid system sounds like a good approach to building - will players be allowed to build whatever sort of monstrosity that they want (with the proper connections), or will there be some sort of templates or limits?

There will be limits and templates due to performance. We want to have smooth multiplayer experience and make sure enemy NPCs are going to function properly.
