Less than two weeks to go and we got to start weeding out themes today, so here goes!

Semicopypasted explanation of LD from last thread:

LD is a game jam. You optionally vote for a theme in the days running up to the event, and then based on that theme or keyword you get 48 or 72 hours (plus a submission hour) to make a game! You need to go on the website, log in, and click 'join event' before it starts!

48 hours is referred to as "compo" and 72 as "jam" and they have different rules—jam is more relaxed and you're allowed to work in a team—so make sure you read the rules on the website first.

When the time is up, a couple of weeks of playing games and rating/commenting them (only people who submitted their own games can do this) commences, and if you want to get ratings/comments yourself you need to do this.

You don't win anything beyond good ratings/comments at best, but it's fun and you always grow a little bit as a developer, as does your portfolio!

Remember that you need to host your game yourself—the LD website does not provide this. The website has a guide for this. Also you need to make it work at least on web or Windows (I think?) to be allowed to submit your game.

Twitter hashtag: #LDJAM (even if you're doing the compo)

Great blog post from an earlier LD here on considering keyboard differences between countries and so on, and more to bear in mind!

I'm really digging the new theme-laughter progress bar.  Gentleman

So far I've managed to get through >10% of the themes, so I might try to get through them all in the remaining 12 days.

Getting through all 3000~ish entries went faster than I imagined. I ended up keeping 2/3 of the themes.

The theme finals (4+1) should start tomorrow, shouldn't they?

I wish they would schedule things like the beginning of the theme voting in the news or the calender of the official ludum dare site, but apparently it's more accurate to follow ludum dare / mike on twitter:

Ludum Dare @ludumdare (14 h ago):
"Last day to Slaughter Themes for Ludum Dare 40. Actually, last half-day! Voting rounds will kick-off tomorrow! [...] #LDJAM"

I was asking myself if votes for themes in round 1 are directly compared to votes in round 3. It would not be fair, because you can vote for themes in round 1 for a longer period of time (+ 2 days).

The final round (tomorrow?) will be 16 themes again, i guess. How are those picked?

16 most highly voted out of the first three rounds IIRC. Which does not bode well, because I couldn't bring myself to a single +1 this time. Tongue

So the best 5 (1st round) + 5 (2nd round) + 6 (3rd round) = 16 will be the final round?

I don't think the themes are that bad. But i have the impression that unusual topics are more likely to be dismissed by the theme slaughter process and rarely appear in the four final voting rounds. Curating might help, maybe. Shrug In the end, it's up to you what you make out of the theme.

I think they're all just in the same pile, so if all of the most popular themes happen to be the round 1 themes, however unlikely, the final round would look just like the first round.

Bad or not, what I find boring is that it's always the same final round themes that never win anyway. LD needs some new blood before we start recycling themes every 10 jams. Shrug

But yes, I always expect to initially dislike the winning theme and to do my best with it anyway because it usually ends up well. Don't get me wrong! I'm HYPED. Hand Shake Left Waaagh! Hand Shake Right Should a theme that I've already done roll back around, tho, I'm not sure what I'd do. That would be very disappointing.

Same pile would be unfair, because you can vote for Round 1 themes for more days. That's why i'm asking. Wink

How's everyone doing?

Nearing the end of day one, I have a few basic mechanics and a whole cast of characters (without collision currently)!
