Lyle in Cube Sector!
This.

Christ, it's one of my favorite games ever. It beats a lot of my favorite commercial games.

It's just FUN, and the music also kicks some serious ass!

i also recommend to frontpage these previously mentioned classics:
destruction carnival
lyle in cube sector
bridge building game

moreover these games are also worth to be mentioned:
pacz! (polished pac man clone)
strange attractors (one switch game in space with fine physics)
special agent (great platformer)
treasure tower (another great platformer)
ocular ink (top down action adventure where you play an rolling eye)
tetra blocks (probably best freeware tetris clone)
ninjah (very good one screen platformer with grappling hook) (homepage disappeared. but i found a mirror of the latest version 1.03)

yeah maybe as a post in classics week you could do a "career starting games post" where you post all the games that really started the career of designers that have been indie staples for a while.

Alex Austin: Bridge Builder
Tom Fulp: Picos School
Chris Delay: Uplink

i cant think of any other designers who are still making indie games now that did 6 years ago.... bah

the team of poke53280 released their first freeware game about 6 years ago...it was called takatis (remake of the shooter katakis) followed by the turrican tribute hurrican. currently they are working on a commercial project called jaques roque.

I think Pixelships is worth a mention, since only Pixelships Retro was covered on TIGS, and that wasn't as good as the original; plus, it was shareware. I'll have a look through my freeware folder when I get home, and see if there's anything else that stands out.

i was thinking at first that recommendations like seiklus and armjoe sound crazy because who hasn't heard of them or played them? But considering the frontpage again, most people there probably *haven't* played those.

a few classics of indie gaming that i really don't think anybody should miss (besides armjoe and seiklus): photopia, the cleaner, magecraft, the spiderweb software exile trilogy (not the other games named exile, but the games that eventually were remade and called avernum), cute knight, uplink (by introversion), the 5 days a stranger series (there are a lot of others but i can't remember them offhand like this, will update later).

this may also be useful:

http://www.hotud.org/reviews/tag/developer/Freeware/?criteria=3&limit=10&order=jr_year&page=1

it's a list of freeware releases on the-underdogs, ordered by year. there are 822 results so it's a lot to wade through, but going through that will give an fairly good history, even if underdogs is a bit biased towards IF games (it seems like half of the games on that list are IF games). they go back to 1979.

On a slightly related note, I have a (mostly) mint condition Klick & Play CD standing on top of my stereo.

No RPGs in there so far; I understand that A Blurred Line, from 2001 (2002?), is considered a classic.

Streambolt is a whole game, my friend.

i thought always that streambolt desero was a more recent version and therefore i didnt checked out the "old" version...
therefore thanks for pointing out that streambolt is a game on its own!

i played until there was the big spiked roll...managed to get to the end of that passage and then saw the boss...but then - oh well - the glorious microsoft error occured. and bam back on desktop...
this took me about 20 min. do you know how many levels exist after that boss?

anyways, great game so far with fine variety. very entertaining.
definitely worth to be frontpaged!

btw. it would be cool if gustav kilman would have a little homepage where his games are showcased...

He hasn't had a site in years... when he did it was only for his art.

I think the game has five levels or something like that.
