Lists like this are hard but all time would be:

1. Chrono Trigger (the undisputed king for me)
2. Star Wars Empire at War
3. Mass Effect 1,2,3 (I rank them all the same as it's 1 big story and I enjoy playing through all three in order)
4. Dragon Age Origins, II, Inquisition (similar to ME)
5. Stardew Valley
6. Path of Exile
7. Simutrans
8. Far Cry 4
9. South Park Stick of Truth
10. Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic (1)

Let's rank our all time overall favorite games! I've been thinking a lot about this lately, because my number 1 just got bumped.

Been think about this lately as my number 1 also got bumped several months ago. While some others don't feel like they held on as time passed (and i completely forgot MTG before) Old list:

1. Fallout 1
2. Zelda: Link's Awakening
3. The Talos Principle
4. Diablo 2
5. Papers Please
6. Life is Strange
7. Sanitarium
8. The Walking Dead
9. An Untitled Story
10. This War of Mine

Revised:
1. Disco Elysium
2. Fallout 1
3. The Talos Principle
4. Life is Strange 1 / 2
5. Papers Please
6. Diablo 2
7. Magic the Gathering
8. This War of Mine
9. Zelda: Link's Awakening / OOT
10. Sanitarium / Broken Sword

Guess honorable mentions should go to Braid and Aquaria - games that got me into gamedev.

If measured by how many hours I've sunk into them, these games I've given at least 50-100 hours to, in some cases much more. On that basis I'd have to call them my favorites.

Disgaea (any of them)
Resident Evil 4
Resident Evil 5 (Mercenaries, baby!)
Brogue
Super Metroid (on account of playing every well-designed hack I can get my hands on)
Little Big Planet 2 (THE most replay value on this list)
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Dark Souls
Dark Souls 3
Bloodborne
Starcraft (maybe more time watching pro replays than actually playing myself)
Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion (probly Skyrim too)
Street Fighter 2
Street Fighter 4

If including ones I haven't racked up quite as many hours on:

Spelunky
Dance Dance Revolution
Sekiro ~Shadows Die Twice
Demon's Souls
(Forbidden) Siren
Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Kakyusei
Ninja Gaiden 1-3
Shadow of the Colossus
God Hand
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Silent Hill 2
Super Punchout
Katamari Damacy
Brain it On!
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Mega Man 2 or 3
The Fool's Errand (if you even know what this is you're as old as me)
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain
Tokimeki Memorial
Monster Hunter 3
Ouverture Facile
Portal 1 or 2
Final Fantasy 12
Tetris

In no particular order:

  • Disco Elysium: I love the way leveling up and developing your personality go hand in had, and the story is one of the few that really made me feel
  • Cruelty Squad: Genuinely enjoy the gameplay, and I also love how creative it is. Also it has the best grappling hook in all of gaming
  • DUSK: Who says boomer shooters can't have a great story?
  • Lonely Star: Shame it never got finished, but even the 1.1 demo is a few solid hours of great action/stealth with just enough crefting to make you feel like a survivor; but the best part is how the story between presenting the supernatural as real and presenting it as all in your head. And the ending is the only one in gaming that ever made me fall off the chair laughing
  • The Eternal Castle: Remstered: This really is a great example of how a retro game can take everyhting nostalgia makes you love about something and discard the flaws. And I never even played the games it's inpored by, so the fact that I loved it is proof it stands tall on it's own
  • Anodyne: One of the few games that really manages to awe with how much is hidden inside
  • Supraland: The best puzzle metroidvania I know about, and one that really caters to my desire to go out of bounds and find secrets. Whenever you think "wait, can I do that?", you can
  • Stories Untold: The only horror game I like. It's strenghts are presentation and a well told story
  • Half Life 2: Good shooter in it's own right, and great platform for a lot of excellent mods
  • Nidhogg: The only perfectly balanced fighting game. No bullcrap combos, no broken movesets, just two dudes fencing and hopping around
