So I had talked to someone in the game industry for a little bit who gave me some advice and allowed me to talk to someone from a big studio and he had told me most places won't hire junior roles from out of state as they have a local pool. I was wondering if someone could confirm this? I've been struggling to find work for years and this just sounds like I really have no way to get ahead as I'm in NC and there are hardly any game studios here and I already applied to all the ones that are hiring here.

I don't know what your discipline is.

You say NC has barely any studios, but it already has more than most of the country other than the SF, Seattle, and Austin hubs. The reason studios don't want to hire juniors from out of state is because they don't want to pay to relocate someone that low on the totem pole. However, if your portfolio is good enough you have a chance. Like they said, depends on the studio too. A big risk you could take is to move to one of these hubs without a confirmed job to possibly improve your chances, but there's no guarantee.

If you aren't getting the attention of studios in your own state, I don't know how good your chances are for other studios. Again, this varies by discipline, which you didn't list.

Which makes their mascara run, which only compounds the issue

I got hired out of state as a junior dev.
It's definitely possible. Just keep looking and polishing up your portfolio. It took me a lot of luck and time.

What do you think contributed to you being hired?
