"There will be one more console generation and then after that, we will be streaming, all of us." - Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot.
Ubisoft CEO expressed this concept recently. Do you think we'll play only through streaming any time soon?

Much of the world still has doesn't have good or stable enough internet for streaming to be viable, so unless the infrastructure gets a massive upgrade in the next 10 years, probably no.

Remember when steam spy creator and many industry people correctly predicted that x360 and ps3 gonna be last console generation and Gaikai, Onlive and mobile AAA gonna take over.

Internet connection is also my doubt about this. Do you think 5G could help?

things will coalesce into the pc style architecture of the current consoles but follow a phone style upgrade path because having to invest in getting people to sign up to your ancillary services and then periodically nuking them and having to re coax customers results in a needless duplication of labour when you can just have confusing rebrands, mid term refreshes, bad pr from how difficult it is to communicate which games will work on their system and which won't, but still get those monthly ten dollars and not have to recreate your infrastructure every decade

A major overhaul of our internet infrastructure isn't technically infeasible at this point, it's just unlikely due to a lack of funding. A wrinkle in the whole "streaming is the future" thing is that you need to have a lot of localized servers to make sure latency doesn't become an issue. Anyway, I think the reason why this Yves dude is saying this is because he noticed that we're reaching the point where hardware can't really improve that much anymore, or at least can't improve significantly enough to give people a reason to buy new consoles. Serving streamed games seems like a solution to that problem, but again, the internet needs to be able to support that. Mmm, streamed hams.

We will also all move just to smartphones and VR extensions for smartphones... Even if anything like that happens, there will still be a want for gaming-specific machinery, so I don't think streaming will kill consoles anytime soon...

Hope everyone is 100% aware that the purpose of a public statement, especially a "prediction", by a CEO is to direct investor money and isn't necessarily based on or relevant to objective reality

- Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. What makes the words of the Ubisoft CEO more credible than the words of a politician or a random guy on the street?

One or two or three and then there will no longer be any consoles. That's the future at any rate. Personally, I can't wait for the cloud computing revolution.

The PC will eventually win, because when consoles are launched they are already obsolete.

That's true. But many people can't afford a good PC, and probably consoles are a good trade-off for them. Also, a streaming solution could allow players to play even outside, just needeng screen, controller and a good enough internet connection.

normal people don't want to fuck with pc shit, especially as the autism kroner genie has been let out of the bottle so in addition to needing to learn a new language to understand computer parts the availability and cost of those parts is now subject to the whims of a self propagating ecological disaster designed to facilitate horse pornography sales
the pc will always win in that the architecture will be used, but the end user experience will be wildly different

Yes, but nowadays a console that tries to own the living room costs way more that a mid grade computer that beats the console in any field. Media capabilities, connectivity and the openness of the system are all in PCs favor. Of course, if you just want a gaming machine, a console is the way to go.
Besides, if you purchase a balanced computer, you don't need to learn computer parts. Nowadays most people at my work don't even know that there's a CMOS battery in there.
