So this remix of Saint Jhn's "Roses" comes from a person in Kazakhstan named Imanbek. Created quickly in FL Studio, it blew up big, and now has hundreds of millions of views, over a billion streams, and has won a grammy.

Definitely a banger, and it also illustrates the outsize possibilities of going viral on the Internet. All anyone theoretically needs to do is make a great piece of novel content and it might catch fire. Location doesn't matter. Of course, the flip-side of that is that it's harder for any individual average artist to stand out. It reminds me of the discussion we had about super nodes and power laws in the Video Games as Art thread.

Anyway, it's a good track with a cool story.

Just as someone who discussed the super-node theory: my current POV is that the black and white creative have / have not is a bad system. There should be more paths to being a sustainable artist that don't involve making a mega hit. But alas, if making a mega hit is what you have to do I'll do it.

Here is what I'm listening to:

Watching/listening to:

CW: racist language that was commonplace in the fifties, and narrator quoting it verbatim. It's a documentary from the 1980s so yeah... so far it does at least acknowledge the massive amount of segregation happening (although it doesn't seem to question it either - for example it mentions that white people in Mephis were used to "country" music without taking a moment to consider that this was already a product of segregation by itself)

edit: found the doc in a reply to someone linking https://medium.com/cuepoint/like-it-is-bob-dylan-explains-what-really-killed-rock-n-roll-f6a4b6587a1a somewhere else on-line

@JobLeonard reminds me of this other nostalgia-wave classic:

One of the things I liked about the old trek is that they would have an intro scene that seemed totally random but really the whole movie is revealed in that scene. Which is part of the nerdy old writing of old trek. Climbing the mountain isn't about love, like the kind of love involved with getting your fingers in there (lol), its about building a relationship with a once hostile nation, which would be saved by gravity boots. Nutrek seems to have decided this is boring, and so the jocks are running the show.

Wrath of Kahn had a few intro scenes that set the tone for the entire film:

Of course, literary buffs will know that the book in question involves a character sacrificing themselves for another character who he felt was more worthy of living.

And then I always think of this scene when I have a very painful frustrating moment in my life:

Of course the parallel between the classic book and the movie is pretty obvious. Now I could never get past the first third of Moby Dick because it needs A LOT of editing. The book could be so much shorter imo. The beauty of the trek scene is that he breaks a miniature model of his own ship while talking about how he has to avoid destroying the ship. Its nuanced and bold at the same time. Coffee
