lol are you trying to bait me? ok i'll bite!

tbf "friday" mentions some of the only ambient game soundtracks that are actually good lol. personally i'm not a big fan of the mood technique of scoring film (aka put samey sounding dross under every single scene) so im not a fan of the same thing applied to videogames by default. still recognize when its actually done well tho (as in the above mentioned gams).

i really like the idea of soundtrack music that doesn't just stay in the background but drives a scene and i also like songs used in a soundtrack. i know quentin tarantino is kind of an immature edgelord a lot of the time but i still have a soft spot for him because he's imo the only modern hollywood director who does music really well and draws on a wide variety of material rather than just string orchestra pap and electronic ambiance.

anyway, japanese game music tends to be more in the foreground, poppier and more "song oriented" so obv i prefer it over "western" game music. HOWEVER: 95% of japanese game music is just as generic as western gam music. there are ppl who think that catchy melody = automatically good, but soooo many japanese game soundtracks sound like either smooth jazz, the lighter side of prog rock and commercial hard rock (jrpgs!) or YMO ripoffs. i can count the game soundtracks i would actually listen to outside of a game on 1 hand.

i feel like the music is the thing in games that generally gets the least thought and that sucks (the "brown shooter" art direction problem exists for music too, except 10 times worse). there's so much games could do with music, both mechanically and aesthetically, that is never explored.

ok rant over

@cybereinstein
No I didn't but I appreciate that comment Wink

Music is like gameplay vs story or image vs text in comics, it should be in a dance not in a SM relationship with a uke and seme. I like the FF ost because it goes back and forth in front and and on the back, maybe even more in the talking FF as the presence of the third partner (voice) force sound to back down (contrast to aerith theme kicking when text box start flying (to supplement the absence of voice) when they meet the first time. In general it's very accentued and that accent is shared moment to moment between all the artistic channel. That's why "crappy" game like ff7 still hold today vs heavy polished but boring cinematic game.

The Queen is Dead is a great album.

Right now I'm listening to Stevie Wonder, Eminem, Simon and Garfunkel, Pulp, and Frank Ocean.

Frank Ocean's Channel Orange is a hugely touching album.
