Here's something I just threw together. You can now store your favourite colors you choose for the interface through the color picker. Stored colors will be saved for each player profile individually.

Looks realy good.
While building my residential zone, after planning my home, i have a problem to build my plan. It notifys me i have no "plank" in my storage. Though i have chopped down some trees, converted the logs to planks, there is no way to transport them to the storage ... ... does right clicking the storage fail?? can't destroy my storage either!
Also, zoning some area needs to be more visible, a good (green) zone is barely visible above grass. And starting on the correct tile is hard too, i started with the first click to close to the road a lot. As last but not least it's close to unpossible to count the size of the zone you want to create.
Edit: i found the way to transport the planks to the storage, it's left click and drag though dragging them to the storage space ain't good enough, must be the plaque?

In order to transfer items in the storage, you have to drag the item on the stockpile signpost. You'll know it worked if the mouseover text of the signpost lists the item as its contents. Thank you very much for the feedback I'll try to improve the things you mentioned better for the next version. You're also welcome to use the forum!

Download Start-a-Town! v0.1.1b alpha * 4.34 MB (self-extracting exe) * 4.24 MB (rar) * 4.44 MB (zip)Bug fixes
* Fixed missing terrain if you pressed the keyboard instead of the mouse at the end of the loading screen. * Reduced idea generation rate (was high for testing purposes). * Fixed crash when changing resolution. * Fixed crash when moving inventory items after accessing the backpack through the GUI rather than by pressing the (B) button.

The game gives me an error when I tried to run it. ERROR in action number 1 of Trigger Event: Update for object obj_property1:
Error defining an external function. I ignored the errors, but after that I couldn't get any further than the main menu. Please have this fixed. I'm really looking forward to it!

It seems like you forgot to extract the DLL file as well! Try again!

Actually I do have them all extracted in one folder. I'm running on Windows 7, if that makes any difference.
I'll try running it on a different platform.

Mine has windows7 too and I also tested it on a xp machine and it works. But the mention of external function means there's a problem with the dll. Weird. edit: I fixed some bugs and reuploaded.Download Start-a-Town! v0.1.1b alpha * 4.34 MB (self-extracting exe) * 4.24 MB (rar) * 4.44 MB (zip)Bug fixes

Sorry for the double post, but I just uploaded a new version with some issues fixed. LINKS REMOVED, DEMO OUTDATEDGeneral # Updated the graphics for some objects to reflect the new artistic style the game will follow. Until all graphics have been updated though, the new ones might seem a bit out of place. # Information icons on windows will flash until you mouseover them if "Tutorial tips" is enabled in the Game Settings. # Added several new "Did you know?" tutorial windows.
Bug fixes # Fixed crash when right-clicking on items in the inventory. # Hunger indicator (stomach) was missing. # Planting progerss bar wasn't progressing. # Some GUI elements didn't move as supposed to when the game speed was set to Pause. # Fixed some interface positioning issues when switching to a lower resolution.

Looking good! The problems I've described in my previous posts are no longer an issue. There are some bugs that I encounter from time to time, but I'm still not too sure what's causing them; I will report back when I get specifics. Keep it up!

Last summer I abandoned Game Maker and started rewriting the game in XNA. So, bumping this cause I'm very satisfied with how it's working out. Less time working around Game Maker's limitations, More time coding exactly I want. Here's a picture I just took, I hope you like the (latest) visual style. The terrain is randomly generated.
