Just started Elex. If you're looking for a game that hates you, hates your time, and would probably !@#$ your girlfriend while you're hanging out with the guys I'd recommend giving it a shot.

The Witcher 3 and Kingdoms of Amalur if you like action.
I can second both of these. Witcher 2 is still super solid as well.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic released in 2006, same engine as Half Life 2.
I second on Kingdoms of Amalur too, very unaknowledged game, feels like Fable 2, but much more vast in content and flexibility

I loved The Witcher 2, but in comparison today is like a small DLC of The Witcher 3 for longevity and contents.

Stuff The Witcher 3 in an incinerator and punt Kingdoms of Amalur off a cliff because the only action RPG you have any business playing that isn't Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
is Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. It might be about as visually interesting as TES: Oblivion, which is to say not very, but it's been made by a company who knows how to do combat which is important on its own because the game is about 98% killing things and looking like a boss doing it. It's off on its own trip, there's stuff in here that other games really need to take on-board in particular your body size affecting your stats and carrying capacity and clambering all over big monsters in order to stab them in the back of the head because that's a fun thing to do despite the climbing controls being confusing beyond belief. You can romance nearly every NPC in the game and it's done in the simplest way possible which leads to some hilariously unplanned endgame outcomes. Multi-classing is totally OP once you unlock the Assassin class, it's got some of the best magic spells ever and when you're up to it there's an optional dungeon separate to the entire game which is like Tomb Of Horrors for people who never played D&D. It's such an eccentric game. Once it clicks with you tearing yourself away from it is the hardest thing you'll ever find yourself doing.

Tried playing DMoM&M recently, I remember loving it when it came out but now? Woof. It's pretty rough.
I got murdered in DD:DA by a 3 headed snake after wandering around in the dark for what felt like hours. Never had the heart to pick it up again.

I preferred Ys Origin instead, Lacrimosa of Dana changed the usual progression of the series: you need to explore 100% of a region map to unlock a region and progress to the story. The problem is that most of the time you can't complete the region the first time you visit it, leaving a few % unexplored that is at the other end of the entrance, introducing a back tracking that is slowing down the good pacing of the first hours.
