Does anyone know? I've been here for quite a few months now, posting on and off, and I'm only two squares above level 1. I'm not saying that I want to be the maximum level right now and that if you don't give it to me I'll throw a tantrum. Not at all. That'd be extremely childish of me.

All of the level 10 users I've seen posting around are moderators and people who've been here for ages, so I'd assume that gaining levels takes quite a long time, or is curated in some way, but I don't know for sure.

Would telling people how it works allow them to game the system? I'm curious.

To my knowlegde it's simply the post count. You can game that count quite simply, and you will be banned quickly for spamming.

OK. Well since I'm not planning on filling the forums with endless streams of furious typing any time soon, I guess I'll guess I'll just have to be patient. Sounds like it's a little simpler than GameJolt's system, which to my knowledge deals with larger numbers and tracks other things like quality game releases and attendance.

Thank you for your reply! I was worried that given the quality of the threads beside this one that I'd be forced to delete it and move it to the 'pollution' thread (and granted I still may have to), but it's reassuring to see that this might not be the case.

So here's a follow up question for you all: where did this system come from, and when was it introduced?

I haven't used PHPBB myself at all, so it may be a standard feature of the platform (I'll probably look that up at some point), but was there a time before experience points?

Joke answers are much appreciated.

Perhaps it's like QI's scoring system. It's so complex, no-one can know or they'll be driven insane.

You are starting to think like a long term user, why need puny point calculated using a d20 system?
