note: to quit the game, press Alt+f4
it's a holdover from when the game was on display, as soon as I can get ahold of my programmer, i'll put out a fixed version

The Departure was my team's project for the UTDallas's Game Lab class, a semester long collaboration between 4 people: a programmer, a artist, a sound guy, and me, the creative director. The game was written in XNA, with art in photoshop, and sound done in Musagi & sfxr, both by the wonderful DrPetter. As our final, the game was put up in the "spring arts" festival at our school, and was installed in the school art gallery for a short time.

The Departure is my attempt as something approaching an "art game", so if I come off as sounding pretentious, well...  Gentleman- pip pip

eep, it figures. try installing the .Net Framework 3.5 SP1 here. the installer's suppose to do that for you if it's not already installed, but it doesn't hurt to double check.

edit: no, that's dumb and cant possibly be the problem. what's the error message you're getting, if any?

I don't remember what it said, but I do have the most recent version of the .Net Framework.

There was actually another program on this forum someone made that I had another crash issue with that tried to install the .Net Framework as well.

I think it's best to just trust your users to be competent enough to install it on their own, and just leave a line in the readme that says they need it to install the game just in case, y'know?  I don't know if there's some bug in the code that's supposed to detect or install that or what, but in either case, I think most people would prefer to do it on their own rather than have 'helpful' programs do it for them.

Anyway, I think the screen shots you posted look good.  What type of game is it, straightforward platformer?  A Metroid style game?

Played this a bit. So, is this related to Pilgrimage somehow? Tongue

It's certainly interesting, but honestly that music needs some work, unless this is what you were going for.

The platforming also doesn't feel very smooth. I can't pinpoint it exactly.

Other than that it's pretty good.

It gets really hard. I couldn't get past level... 6 or 7? Can't recall.

The gravity is really fast to get you down. I think that's what makes the platforming hard.

Moonwalking across a randomly-glitched level was pretty fun. Grin

it's a pretty standard platformer - collect coins, stomp 'goombas', until we break it, that is. as you might have been able to tell from the screenshots, the game starts to glitch out the longer you play it.

I actually checked out the pilgrimage just a little bit after I posted and I was surprised at the similarities. it's like we were using similar devices to make totally different points. heh, even the names are similar. (I really liked the pilgrimage by the way)

yea, the game gets really hard around that time. there are even cases when the level becomes unfinishable. we put in a restart feature that "rerolls" a level's glitch - I was shot down in calling it the suicide button.
