It's been a while since I've been on TIG, and I've been wondering who's around. Feels a bit emptier than it was in days past.
Hope you have a nice day/night.

There are a few new people here as well, though probably not as many as in OP's time.

Social media might have killed the forum format. It is a strange thing, this world, sometimes it feels like one of those stories about wishes being interpreted litteraly that turn out having horrible results.

Nobody asked for social media sites to be set up the way they are, and I doubt indie gamedevs are using Facebook etc. as their primary communication channel. There is a healthy number of threads in the DevLogs section, so my guess is that the people are still here but they stopped caring about casual conversation.

That's pretty much what's happened, yeah.
I don't think all forums are dead though, it's just that hobbyist communities don't always have the resources to maintain a forum for very long, both from a technical and management standpoint.

I mean, social media in a way, is set up where the user is his own moderator and can decide to block unpleasant conversations, whereas in a forum setting, it is up to the moderation team to decide what is acceptable, and it provided with interesting discussions back in the day. The infamous 'games as art' debates could fill a lot of pages of lively back and forths very few bans in the process. I see a lot of devlogs on twitter, which seems a better format to post short updates, in my opinion; but I find it impossible to follow a discussion on twitter, my age is starting to show I'm afraid

For what it's worth, so far I have never promoted a game on social media.

The answer is more boring; We don't have access to the twitter account rn. Same deal as with server backend access.

I noticed that TIG has been decreasing in terms of users over the years.
I missed out on that '2007-2011 Indie Golden Age' where it was most active. However back about 5/6 years ago we still had things like the DevLog Awards, an active homepage, frequent DevLog comments and posts, general/games posts every day, etc.
A lot of the more popular games like Rain World, Moonquest, and Obra Dinn were released. I feel a lot of those regulars who followed those threads passed on to other communities.
Indie games have definitely evolved over the last decade, but I do feel a lot of that smaller and tightly knit community feeling has been on the decline.

Freeplayers are providing rich autocrats with lifelike AI in creatively shrinking universes; youths around the world are providing free access to their half/full naked bodies while advertising cheap products to the masses; people are publicly giving away their private information while making sure they keep feeding the biometric surveillance machine that is coming soon to a city near you. Yeah, we did not horribly deviate on reality's highway. What a mess we made, when it all went wrong
