I originally found out about it from this thread.
Ah, that thread was quite a source of inspiration for me!
Have you seen "The Heron and the Crane" yet? That's another of my favorites from that thread.

This definitely looks worth keeping an eye on. The fact that you've already got an engine up and running gives me all the more reason to be interested.

The game already seems atmospheric even at this early stage. Visually, I'm hoping you'll go with something a bit more like the source material and less like a traditional game. I'm seeing definite indications of you going your own direction in the mockups, but I'm also seeing echoes of Yoshi's Island and Knytt, if I'm not mistaken. You're obviously a very talented artist, so I'd like to give you my vote of confidence and encourage you to really go with a less traditional style here. There are a lot of really neat stylistic touches from "The Hedgehog in the Fog" which might be a good source of ideas.

Thanks for all the replies, can't believe this thread is on the second page already! I will talk about what I'm planning for the gameplay soon. Before that I think I want to talk about the themes I've taken from Hedgehog in the Fog and how I intend to convey them.
Don't worry about being on the second page... turnover is just high around here. I'm sure it's not for lack of interest in your game.

Keep up the good work, this looks ace.

Thanks! I actually meant that I'm surprised that this thread already has two pages. Wasn't expecting such a good response.

I haven't seen "The Heron and the Crane", will check it out.

I grew up with Hedgehog in the Fog on the telly every now and then. It was creepy as hell and scarred me for life, glad to see it has inspired something with such a fantastic art direction.

Be sure to include that freaky owl somewhere to scar yet another generation for life!

Wow, great artwork. Although I notice the only difference between the 2nd and 3rd styles is the characters are sepia-toned in the latter.

Looks like it has good potential, although...

That image? Pretty deep in the uncanny valley.
That second one of the two of them looks pretty nice, though.

This is looking really cool!  I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread, and am looking forward to seeing where this goes.  Smiley

Art style wise, I think the ones with larger patches of solid colour work really well at conveying a mood; there aren't too many details to get caught up in, so you focus on the whole a lot faster.

In terms of the uncanny valley comment, that image does bug me, but only because of the rosy cheeks.  Remove them, and the problem* is solved, and you're left with a really awesome portrait pic (much stronger character than the second one of the two).

*if it's not a problem to you, then keep them, because it's your game.  Smiley

As many have already said, this looks great. I particularly love the character art, pixelated and otherwise. It reminds me of Akihiko Yoshida's work (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akihiko_Yoshida). I can't wait to see more of this.

I can't add much to what everyone else said besides "this looks neato", but man, I admire your artistic style. So few pixels and it still looks great. Hope you post more.

It's not dead! I'm just super busy with something else. I'm now planning on turning this into a portfolio piece so I can work on it for school, it'll get done that way for sure. I'll be aiming to release it in May 2010.

Characters (only the red one is playable):

You have just earned a notch of my respect.

Any chance of co-op? It seems a shame to waste the theme of multicolored twins.
