Hi everyone and welcome to our devlog!

We are a game development team formed by some colleagues who study videogame design and development.
We are currently working on a game -that have to be made in a month (:O)- for a final project and we were greatly encouraged to make some devlogs, and we thought this will be the best place to do so ^^

We are making a web multiplayer racing game called Braking Down in which you have to be the last in order to win! The vehicles run downhill and they have to do whetever it takes for braking and get the last position.

There are obstacles on the racing kart like mud puddles -which you would like to run over them- or accereleration ramps which you have to avoid if you donĀ“t want to pass the other cars. Also, there are mario-kart-like porwer-ups (in this case power-donws...hehe) that you use for decelerating yourself or make other vehicles go faster. We will introduce them eventually in the following devlogs.

Here's the basic movement, the game has to be playable in mobile devices too so we opt for very simple controls

We are using Unity

Hit mechanics (November 12, 2019)

If you stay a short period of time behind another vehicle you'd have the opportunity to hit it in order to maintain your position. But take care, you can fail the hit and the other players can dodge you!

This has been done using raycasting and a curve of animation in order to manage the speedMultiplier of the vehicles when they attempt to hit another one.

Vehicles Concept Art (November 14, 2019)

Our theme is a racing game but using kid toys as vehicles. A little boy called Lucho is the protagonist and the one who puts his toys to compete in all kind of places that he imagines, like a candy road!! Although he is very creative he is a bit... careless about his own toys and he ends up breaking them Sad. That's because you, as a toy, have to try to be the last one in order to not get destroyed!

Here there are some toys the players would be able to choose to race:

Currently, we are working on another 3 more toys!!!

Soon we'll be showing new mechanics that will play with the idea of braking in order to get the last position or... just for teasing the rest of the players.

Surfaces, Obstacles and more Concept Art (November 24, 2019)

We have the main objective, be the last one. But we need stuff we can use in order to brake!! So here come some surfaces and obstacles that will make you go faster or slower.

Surfaces

  • Mud: Slows you while driving over it.
  • Acceleration Ramp: Gives you a velocity boost, you can push other players while you boost.
  • Ice: Makes you lose control going zigzag, also makes you a little faster.

Obstacles

  • Breakable Block: Slows you a little if you crash with it.
  • Movable Block: A Breakable Object moving, reappers in a short period after breaking.
  • Inflatable: Pushes you back.

Looks like a fun concept!
Will you be needing any music for this out of interest?
