Pan's Labyrinth << Devil's Backbone
And it's practically the same movie.
As for what does a movie mean or how it inspires??? Bleh.
There are two versions of every movie. The version the director shows us and the way we remember it (from our own perspective) later on.
That is why Mary Poppins is super-awesome to me. And it has little to do with what's actually in the movie. It's more, how I feel about certain aspects of the movie and the people involved in its production.

Smithy, it's ok. I didn't take it personally. It's the internet, after all. I wasn't trying to attack you, just explain why I put Eraserhead up and why I find it inspirational. Your opinions of the great Lynch and what he was trying to say are wrong.
I don't think I said anything about Lynch's intent, other than it being his most personal movie. I don't claim to "get" Eraserhead. All I can go on is what I see, and I like it. That's it. I have reasons why I like the images and encounters in Eraserhead, and I don't think they are the "correct" ones. I might idolize Lynch a little bit, but it's because I enjoy so many of his films. I do think his sound design is fantastic. Part of taking inspiration from things is appropriating them. I read a lot into Lynch's work on purpose, but I don't attribute it to him; it comes from me. I'm going to go ahead and add a recent movie that I don't think has been mentioned yet. Let the Right One In is quite nice.

I can't even remember the official name for that movie. I refer to it as "Transformers 2: America Blows Up Robots."

Why does being made by hollywood or after the year 2000 prevent something from being a movie you need to see? Just because it has a possibility of familiarity doesn't mean it's not a movie a designer needs to see.
You should rename the thread; "Movies that there's a good chance you've not seen yet and need to"
Start a different thread called "Movies that can provide good inspiration to designers" if you want to keep the restriction arbitrarily placed in this thread.

I kinda agree with Ivan on this one. Most of the Movies that break the arbitrary rules are shit I have seen/ heard of, I'm looking for something new! I know you probably like There Will Be Blood, but I know that and I have seen it.

Electric Dragon 80.000VOne of my absolute favourites that has everything - Hero, Villain, Electricity, Lizards, Manliness, Rock and Rawr. Hey, if you like that one, you could check out Survive Style 5+, also with Tadanobu Asano!

Has anyone seen The Man Who Stole the Sun? I like that one too. Particularly when he tests his anesthesia on the cats!
Poor cats.

I've seen 3-Iron last night and totally recommend it (Maybe someone mentioned it already)
There isn't speech in the movie; I mean, there is, but it's just noise compared to the beauty of the silence between the main characters.
It's a strange humane story.

I imagine I'm going to be breaking a lot of rules with some of these. Most of the ones I would've shown that follow the rules have been posted already. Anyone who liked 12 monkeys will probably like (this is the Full movie.) pretty sure this is a hollywood movie (i've no clue how to tell otherwise) The Labyrinth best movie ever. No questions. Return to Oz It's fairly childish but there are some really cool ideas in this movie, the hall of severed heads creeps the living hell out of me. Alice by Jan Svankmajer MoreCity of Lost ChildrenCubei dunno...

I'm glad I saw Alice, though it struck me as manipulative in some ways. Some parts were really incredible, though. I loved the room where the floor is full of holes inhabited by sock-worms.

AAAhh, you took the only movies I had thought of reccomending. I shall only express my agreeness by quoting you and saying hurray! In my home town there's a film festival each year. That's what I really miss in this small city I'm at now ooh, I know of some other stuff which is crazy, all seen at the film festival: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327169/ , ressurection of the little match stick girl , crazy korean movie with some mmo-alternative reality. really on crack. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0286751/ , Kairo, a flawed but slow paced horror that creeped under my skin. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0170544/ , Samurai Fiction , quite cool. Oh all of this became a bit Asian. damnit I need to watch more movies! Great thread.
