Intro
Hello to all! This is a little PICO8 game I'm working on my free time (which sums up to a few hours per week). It is my first PICO8/Lua project and it serves as an introduction to the tool also. It is being done more for the fun of making it than to have a viable sell-able product at the end.

Game
The game itself is a cross between Timber Tennis and Mario Kart, in the essence that it plays like pong (Timber Tennis style) but you are able to get random power-ups to help you beat the opponent.
Player can move right and left, at specif intervals, to hit the ball. Hitting is automatically and the direction you hit is random.
Player, and enemy, gathers power-ups that can be used by the two action buttons of PICO8 (Z and X on the keyboard).

Available power-ups are:
 - Earthquake (shakes the screen making it difficult to see for a while)
 - Curved ball
 - Invisible ball
 - Fast ball
 - Time slower (defense move to slow the ball down)

Art
Art is all done by me, which is not my strong suit but serves as a nice workout.
Players (based on https://0x72.itch.io/pixeldudesmaker:

Coins:

To do list
 - Enable local multiplayer mode (Currently only AI vs player working)
 - Create match intro and point scoring screen (Currently point system works but it has no visual aid apart from the score itself)
 - Create an AI game league, with different increasing levels of AI
 - Add background music and sfx for each power-up used
 - Clean-up code (Lots of commented-out code still hanging around. Many functions can be improved to re-utilize code)
 - Release playable demo within Jan/2020
 - Add more power-ups, such as double player (defense), stunning (invert opponent keys for a few seconds), bombs, ...
 - Enable player customization (at least colors) - Not a priority

All feedback is highly appreciated!!!!!

Title screen was updated following some feedback received on twitter:

Now that this is finished I'll go back to work on the actual game code.

Looks really nice! I think especially the small effects which emphasise the ball movements really add to the smooth and pretty polished impression.

Thanks for the feedback!
I'm glad to see that people like it!
Since I'm working within PICO8 limitations, I tried to improve the game feel as much as I could so it would not look like it had any limitations... guess it is working!
I plan on releasing it on mobile, since I can export a HTML5 file from PICO8 but I have to improve the on screen controls (I'll later publish a video showing how it works right now)
I also released the first video of the devlog, giving an overview of the game. Further on I'll show how I did the specific parts such as the ball in the intro screen or the in game movement.
Take a look:

This is the game currently running on my android mobile:

Somehow the action keys got mixed up but the game runs very smooth and it is quite enjoyable to play. I intend on either moving away from the virtual keys (having the player touch the sides of the screen) or to have the whole thing look like a handheld console. Still haven't decided which way to go.

I've been working on adding some in game art to show the player the score and the next enemy they will face. Im still working on the smear effect of this art coming in and out.
Now each enemy has it's own name and AI parameters, which makes them more or less harder to beat. Next feature will be to have them have unique colors also.

First demo released!
Try it out at https://tinygameslab.itch.io/tennis8
For this demo I have improved the art a little bit, added different colors for each enemy, and enabled local multiplayer support!
