I just finished writing this article. https://indiegamedev.net/2020/01/24/how-to-make-quick-chip-tune-music-for-your-game-for-free/

I'm hoping it helps some small devs create some music of their own that they didn't just download. I'll probably write a second article more about the theory of music if there's enough interest.

I'd also like to hear any music that devs make following the article as well.

I wrote a second article because the first one was received fairly well. In this article, things move into theory and notation and I show a way to go about making orchestral-sounding music.

If you want just like, standard 8-bit chip music, I'd suggest beepbox.co over setting up all that jazz to the brand new begginner. Super easy to get started with and quite powerful.

Like you're right, but there's more of these articles to come that rely on things learned in previous articles. I don't want to spend more than 1 article teaching people software.

There's another article up now on making safe-zone music. The kind of music that plays in an area where the players avatar can't be harmed. https://indiegamedev.net/2020/03/03/lets-make-safe-zone-music-for-your-game/

Hey! Wanted to say thanks for this kind of resource. As a complete beginner, this gives me a great place to start trying to understand the subject and actually get my hands on some of the nitty gritty!

You're more than welcome! It's great to hear that it's useful stuff I'm doing; sometimes it feels like dropping things into a void, you know? Please let me know if you get some music made out of it; drop by the website to leave a comment or the forums if you need more help with it.
