Devlog 1: Game trailer

Hey! We are new here in TIGForums. We are here to post the process of our new game, that is going to be released on Steam in May 25th of this year. Nowadays we are in the half of the development, working day by day.
The game consists in a skill and puzzle 2D platformer with spears! You have to explore The Lotus Valley, meet interesting creatures, overcome challenges and defeat bosses.
Here is our first trailer that shows part of the final content of the game.

Devlog 2: Puzzles design

This is our second post what is about the method we are following to design the puzzles that will be included within the levels.

We are using the Kishōtenketsu structure to design the puzzles.

We have a list of all the items that we can use to build them, so we put every puzzle on an Excel, to organized them depending on the level and world of the game. Here is an example, be free to ask about any question or give us any tip if you want it.

We keep working hard!

Devlog 3: Types of spear

Hey! How is the weekend going? We continue working to reach the best possible result. In the continuation of this thread about the development of our game, we show you how our main character, apart from his main spear, will be able to get several different types of spears, for a total of 6.

The main spear is unlimited, but there can be a maximum of 3 active. Once you want to use the fourth one, the one that has been activate for a longer time will be broken. Although, the player can break spears by himself at any time.

The first we will able to use is the elastic spear. Once we are on top of the elastic spear, we can jump higher, thus being able to reach places that we could not with the normal spear.

Devlog 4: Bomb Spear

Hey! New week, but the work is still going. Let's continue this thread where we leave it, the type of spears.

Today we are going to talk about the second type of spear, the bomb spear. This type of spear works like a mine,
you can nail it and after a few seconds, it explodes.

This mechanic let us design different types of puzzles because this type of spear interacts with several objects.
It can break a wall to get a coin or let the player pass through the level or just destroy a wood box.

Devlog 5: Diamond Spear

Hey! Today we are going to talk about the next ability, the diamond spear. This one looks super cool,
because is totally different from the others.

This type of spear let us to play around the maximum of spears we can nail,
because we can preserve this diamond spear apart from the next three normal spears.

Also we can use this diamond spear to block game objects like doors, to let
the player pass through it while is blocked.

Devlog 6: Fire Spear

Hey! We are still talking about the player abilities. The next ability we will see is the fire spear.

This type of spear has two points of view: when you throw the normal spear,
it can be on fire if it pass through a lighted torch, evolving to a fire spear.

But if you have this new fire spear as an ability, you can light up torches to, for example, unlock a door lighting up 3 torches.
Also, you can active a bomb by lighting it fuse.

Devlog 7: The hook spear

Hey! We are here again to continue with the last ability in the game.
Today is the turn of the hook spear.

We decided to unlock this one the last in the game because we consider that is the most powerful ability. This type of spear works differently compared with the rest.

The hook spear, lets the player be faster when he has to move through the level. This is caused because this ability
works like a hook and a teleport. When we throw it and in the moment it is nailed to the wall, the player teleports
from his last position, to the top of the spear.

Devlog 8: Spear thrower arm

Hey! Let's start with the enemies we can find in the Way to Yaatra. We have several types of enemies,
today we are going to talk about the spear thrower arm.

This enemy is a static type and has lots of functions because it replicates our main mechanic. First of all,
it can kill the player if the spear hit him. This arm activates buttons with it spears, like the character,
so we can use this in our favor to design several types of puzzles.

Then, the player can use the enemy spears, to climb up and resolve a lot of circumstances along the level.
Finally, but not less important, we can block this enemy by using our spears, this let the player preserve the
enemy spear to use it in his favor.

Devlog 9: Lava fish

Hey, we are back! We are going to continue talking about the type of enemies
you will find in the Way to Yaatra. Today is the turn of lava fish!

This enemy is completely functional, but we don't have art to show how the fish looks like yet.
Instead, we can show how it works perfectly. The fish only appears in lava zones, but not in all of them.

It works in the way we want, we can set up the distance to player to activate it, the area to jump,
the time to wait to jump again and the jump force, so we can modify the difficulty of this enemy.

It is a little bit hard to explain it with words so we leave here a graphic example to understand
the functionality. Hope you enjoy it!!

Devlog 10: Stalactite

Hey! New week, new devlog! We are going to continue with the enemies.

This type of enemy, the stalactite, is a static threat, which can kill you
extremely quickly.

The stalactite works in this way, when the player pass through its action radio, it falls
down from the wall that it is hanging. So, when it falls, the stalactite can be nailed to a solid
surface.

Then the player can use it as if it were a platform, to overcome obstacles. Also, we can nail spears into it.

Devlog 11: Platform with spikes

Hey! Second devlog of the week, we are going to still talk about enemies and threats
that the player has to face during the game.

Today is the turn of the platform with spikes. This is a static threat like the stalactites,
but it works differently.

So, this a normal platform with spikes on one side of it, but every 2 seconds, the spikes
turns its way to the other side of the platform. The player has to calculate when he can jump and
if he lands into the spikes, he dies.

Devlog 12: Chasing block

Hey! Last devlog of the week and this is our last enemy in the game, the chasing block.
This enemy has a functionality, super cool, because it chases the player every second,
so you have to perfect your ability about player movement.

We took the reference of a similar type of enemy in Spelunky to make it works, but
we adapt it to our type of game.

So, it works in this way. When the player crosses an imaginary line in X or Y axis,
the block starts chasing the player. If it collides with a wall, it stops. But,
if the player is in the middle of the wall and the block, he dies.

Devlog 13: Fire System

Hey! Let's back to the devlog thread, we just finished with the enemies,
so let's continue with some functionality we have in Way to Yaatra, today is the turn of
the fire system.

Apart from one of the player's abilities, the fire spear, we have a fire system that lets us
to interact with several objects in the game. This lets us design lots of puzzles using the
fire system.

For example, we can burn the wood box to deactivate a button, burn a wood fence to continue the level,
or just unlock a door by lighting up a specific number of torches. Also, we can activate bombs using
this fire system.

Devlog 14: Buttons & doors

Hey! Second devlog of the week! Today we are going to talk about buttons
and doors. We take these two objects as a prefab so we can edit it easier.

We use this object in several ways, but we focus on using it to make puzzles, like
open a path to let the player continue the level.

We have lots of type of this button and doors, so we can combine it with other objects
in the game.

This door types are: horizontal door, vertical door, bouncy door, torch key door, spear thrower arm door,
button in the door and spikes door. With all these types we facilitate the design department.

Finally, the button can be pressed by several ways, for example, with a spear, a box or with a stalactite.

Devlog 15: Collectibles

Hey! Last devlog of the week, today we are going to talk about the collectibles,
or coins you will find in the Way to Yaatra.

We decide to include coins in the game cause several reasons. This coin is going to
makes the player more explorer and it will present a very difficult challenge to collect them all.

The principal idea is to not introduce more than 2 coins per level, but, this 2 are going to be
very difficult to reach it.

So, apart from the satisfaction of overcome the challenge of get all the coins, it will unlock
special levels focus on the ability so, it is another reason to try to collect it.

Finally, this coin works like the strawberries in Celeste, because you have to touch a normal surface
to get it safe with you.

Devlog 16: First boss

Hey! Let's continue our devlog thread, today we are going to talk about
the bosses we are including during the game. This is the first you will meet,
and we called it the loop boss.

We refer to this boss by this name for its functionality, because is like a loop,
until you manage to kill it.

So, it works like a time pressure boss, because it is chasing you from behind all time and
the player has to resolve four zones that mix puzzles and ability to get a bomb and hurt the boss.

You have to hit it four times, getting slowed by every hit. After this four hits, it dies.

Currently, we don't have art for this boss so it looks like a prototype but, we will upload it completed soon!

Devlog 17: Second Boss

Hey! We are going to continue with the devlog and keep talking about
the bosses in Way to Yaatra.

The next boss that the player will meet, is the fire boss. It is important, because
it tells us that we have covered about half of the game, so its going to get harder than
the last one we saw it.

This boss is divided in 3 phases. We advance through the phase when we manage to
damage it with the spears.

First phase

During the first phase, it follows the player position and charge a laser that kill us
immediately. We have to pass through the level to get the opportunity to damage it.



Second phase

Then, the second phase is completely different, because the boss keeps in a static position,
but it throws saws to the player position, thus making it difficult to overcome obstacles.



Finally, you have to pass through an ability zone, to kill it and defeat the second boss.

Devlog 18: Last boss

Hey! Last devlog of the week, so, we are going to see the last boss
you have to defeat in the Way to Yaatra.

We don't want to show so much about it, because we don't want to spoil
the whole game, if you are going to play it.

So, this boss has the same ability as the player, it can throw spears and this spear,
can be nailed it to the walls or kill the player.

The player has to take advantage of this spears to climb up and damage the boss. When it is damaged,
it grows up so we have to think about how we can defeat it now.

Devlog 19:Types of bombs

Hey! Let's continue the devlog thread, today we are going to talk about
the functionality of the different types of bomb we have in the game.

So, we have two types of pumps. The player can't grab these bombs
like the boxes, then you have to push these bombs to make them roll.

The bombs interact with other things in the game, like the fire, the spears or the platforms.

Then, the difference between these two types is that one could be used like a bouncing platform and the other is just a normal bomb.

This permits us to design several types of puzzles.
