Hello!

I have been working on this horror game for a solid year+ now: Taken Away







Following a car crash, you have been abducted and tied to a chair. Stranded in this creepy mansion, you have 30 minutes to escape you gruesome fate.

It is a strategic run-based horror game (think Welcome to the Game 2, Granny 1 & 2, etc). Death is permanent, and each time a new game is started, items placement is randomized. Exploration and timing are key to your success. The game starts at 2am, 2:30am marks your death. Events will occurs at certain times, and some of your actions will give you time penalties (for example, getting caught and tied back to your chair will cost you 5 minutes).

On top of the main enemies, a wolf and a man, many threats will make your survival tougher, like bear traps, locks, and this strange creature in the basement...


The game will feature various gameplay mechanics and mini-games.

  • THE CHAIR: three options are provided: struggle and get a 5 minutes time penalty, kick a barrel to reach pliers which makes a lot of noise, or go for the one-time use solution, a hook (fast and silent).
  • THE TRAPS: stepping on bear traps will paralyze you and leave you vulnerable to the wolf. Beat a mini-game to get out of it.
  • THE BOILER: a dozen of ingredients are dispatched around the map, mix 3 of them to get the correct combination and get past the basement creature. Also required: matches, water. The recipe is somewhere around here...
  • THE TV GAME: once the gamepad is acquired, you can use it on the TV to play a mini platformer game which, on completion, will give you the 4-digits code for a locker.
  • THE DRUGS: you can drug the wolf's food as well as the man's food to make them sleep. An event occurs at 2:10am where the man micro-waves its food (audio hint). Once asleep, use tape to gather fingerprints and get access to a new device.
  • LOCKPICKING: a mini-game occurs when lockpicking drawers and doors, lockpick required.
  • SECOND CHANCE: getting caught by either the wolf or the man brings you back to your chair. It has no side effect the first time. On the second capture, the man will severe your right hand, which will make you slow and dizzy (medkit to heal). The third time you get caught, you become a snack for the basement monster (same if time runs out, aka 2:30am).
  • MORE: many interactions are implemented, like a hammer a to break a chain and access the garage, a missing knob on a drawer, put gem into casket to get basement key, etc...


Two different AI will cooperate to catch you: the Wolf and the Man. They are completely different in the way they work: the wolf wanders around the house and the man hides in the mansion, waiting for you to stumble upon him.
The wolf continuously walks around the garden and get alerted by your footsteps. Once alerted, it will run towards you. Stay low. The wolf never enters the house. It has a small bed and a bowl in a corner, it can be drugged and fall asleep for a few minutes.

The man appears at 2:05am, a car engine and a laugh can be heard at this time in the hall (or in the kitchen depending on where you are at). The man hides in a room and waits for you to come in. Listen very carefully for audio hints. A few examples: there is a piano in the living room - the man will play a few notes to attract you, in the kitchen/bathroom - metallic and water sounds can be heard, in the play room - a music box can be heard, do not enter.


Finally, you success revolves around putting your hand on 3 major elements: a KEY to access the basement > the correct MIXTURE to distract the monster and get past it, and the man's FINGERPRINTS to unlock the phone and call the police. Once done, you have to survive 5 more minutes for the ending sequence.


As for today, I'd say the game is finished at 70%. The main gameplay is done and functional. The remaining parts are:
- Movie sequences for winning (cops), losing(death by monster), and the intro (car crash).
- Main menu with options, translations, etc...
- Remaking the cooking mechanic (mixing ingredients on the boiler)
- Playtesting
- General polish
- Trailer, store page


The game is planned to be released this year on Steam for an undefined price yet.
