Sentimental K Devlog #0 - Intro

Hello folks!
We are team "ForDays" in the development of a Rogue-like Action game "Sentimental K".
We will keep up on writing Devlog to share our development process of "Sentimental K" and we would like to hear every one of your feedback Smiley
We hope we can create a game that everyone would love to play it!

~ About the game ~

"Sentimental K" is a Rogue-like video game based on 3D actions.
The game is being developed using Unity Engine and we are planning to launch it on Steam as Early Access in the 2nd quarter of 2020.
Before the description, please watch our trailer video below to get your first feelings about the game!

~ The goal of the game ~

Players must defeat enemies to move forward to the destination by unleashing the powers of [Weapons, Skills, and Artifacts] obtained from confronting various incidences.
If the main character deceases in the middle of her journey, players will lose all of the rewards earned and restart the journey from the beginning.
The core of this game is to bring out the best plays of players own and to reach the end of the journey by finding the best synergies between [Weapons, Skills, and Artifacts] obtained as rewards.

~ Main Features ~


"Sentimental K" blends the dynamic, intuitive gameplay of 3D action games with the unpredictable and ever-changing nature of roguelikes.

Players must defeat enemies and progress towards their goal using 『Weapons, Skills, and Artifacts』 obtained from various situations.
If players die during their journey, they lose all their rewards and must restart from the beginning.

With 5 weapons, 78 skills, 132 artifacts, 13 bosses, and randomly generated dungeon layouts, each playthrough is unique.
You'll need to find your own optimal configurations to make it all the way to the end!

[ PoV (Point of View) ]


The game is based on Top-view, however, to provide players more dynamic battle experiences,
point-of-view will be adjusted when players fight against nearby enemies.

[ Basic weapons ]

On the early access version, there are five weapons in total (i.e. Broadsword, Greatsword, Dual pistols, Whip, Gun-spear).
We are considering adding more weapons after the official opening.
Let's quickly overview at two weapons available in "Sentimental K"!

< Broadsword >
< Basic movements of Broadsword (i.e. basic combo, dash, special attack) >

Broadsword would be an excellent choice if you prefer to use a balanced weapon.
With the broadsword, players can move swiftly, mark enemies, and attack them in furiously.
Marks alone do not have any effects, but players can take advantage of the battle by using special attacks or special skills which activate the mark.

<Greatsword>
< Basic movements of Greatsword (i.e. basic combo, dash, special attack) >

Using Greatsword, players move slowly but their attack would create a heavy area of effect (AoE).
Also, special attack would give players a boost effect to unleash a more powerful effect on the next skill.

[ Skills ]

Currently, there are 60 skills available in total.
More skills to be continuously added after the early access and the official opening.
We expect there would be about 80 skills on the day of the early access.
Let us introduce a few skills as an example Smiley


Each skill have their effects.
Each skill can be effective individually, but we've focused on the point where players could have a lot of fun depending on how well they combine the effects of each skill.

The skills shown as examples may sound complicated, but by combining skills above:
Leave a [Stun Mark] on enemy with 'Throwing Sword'
Stun the enemy with [Stun Mark] by activating the mark with 'Mark Explosion'
Players can make use of 'Battle wings' to apply [Players can immediately reuse this skill twice if this is used on the stunned enemy]

To sum up, players can utilize these skills to make a combo attack as follows:

The above is just one example of many different combinations.
We've provided various plots in which players can come up with other combos.
We wish every one of the players could find their combos, and have fun with seeking better combinations.

[Rogue-like elements ]


① Dungeon Map

"Sentimental K" consists of three different chapters; Act1, Act2, and Act3.
In every Act, different kinds of stages are arranged and connected with randomly generated routes.
At the end of each Act, you must defeat the boss to proceed to the next Act.

② Battle systems

At every stage, players must defeat all enemies generated randomly to continue your journey.
Players will meet different kinds of enemies at each Chapter of the game.
If you defeat enemies, you may have a chance to obtain [Golds, weapons, skills, and artifacts] as a reward.
Defeat stronger enemies spawning at the next stage by using rewards that you earned.

③ Encounters

During your journey, players may encounter a friendly character or an unknown place.
Make your choice for what happens during the encounter with various characters or places,
and receive corresponding results.
Several choices require players sacrifice, but all choices are on your own.
But remember the butterfly effect.
Every choice, whether it is good or bad, will affect your play at the end.

④ Vending machine

Players can purchase weapons, skills, and artifacts by trading with golds that you collected during battles or encounters.
Some items are only available at the machine. Sometimes the machine sells items with discounted prices.
So stopping by the vending machine during your journey might be a superb choice!

⑤ Skills

Actions can vary significantly depending on how you would combine obtained skills.
In the beginning, most of the skills are easy and intuitive to deal with.
Several skills may not perform as well as intended if you wouldn't consider how to use them effectively.
Select the best skills considering your current resources and future resources.

⑥ Weapons

Weapons provide direct feedback to a player's strength while assisting a player's actions.
Particularly, weapon-specific special attacks have a close relationship with special skills.
Thus, it is likely to be more helpful to choose similar weapon types and skills when you use these special skills.
(Of course, sometimes different weapons would be more advantageous depending on your play styles!)
Weapons with a higher rank will increase a player's damage and life,
so you will always have to be careful to obtain more powerful weapons.


⑦ Artifacts

Artifacts will empower additional effects or supportive effects to players' actions.
However, few legendary artifacts can lead to the very new action styles.
Players will consider obtaining artifacts to obtain skills and weapons.

⑧ Rest camp

If you are having a hard time managing life, you could stop by the rest camp to restore your life!
If you believe that the damage you took is slight, you could also strengthen yourself by taking on the training.
Taking advantage of the rest camp could be one possible way to persist your journey.


⑨ Randomness

As mentioned earlier, most of the elements are generated, provided, and obtained randomly.
There are few exceptions to this randomness, of course, but the game will provide players a whole new experience each play.


⑩ Permanent death

If you're dead by a monster, unfortunately, you are going to start from the beginning with a rusted sword.
But do not worry Smiley
As you proceed to play, you will eventually unlock various achievements.
And those achievements will guide you to whole new experiences and routes.
The most powerful weapon is your learning experience during plays.
Trust your plays and abilities!

In today's log, we will describe how weapons, skills, and artifacts work individually and their relationship between them.


Weapons and Skills

Before the overall description, we've decided the most fun part of Sentimental K to be "synergy".
Based on our experiences at Action games, we believed that making players carefully consider which weapons, skills, or artifacts to obtain or apply could bring a lot of fun during gameplay.

The player's weapons are immediately switched and can be used with any skills, but synergies happen only when using the same skills as the weapon type.
Each weapons' special attacks will work to support the skills of the same weapon type.



Let's take a look at an example.
Using special attacks with dual pistols grants a penetrating effect on the "Bullet".
Dual pistol skill called "Gatling" has a stunning effect on the enemy by hitting all six shots.
The special attack of dual pistols imposes penetrating effect to the pistol shot by going through a straight line and stuns all enemies hit by the shot.

Skills and Skills

Despite weapons players use, the synergy between skills and skills can also occur.
Let's take a look at the new effect.


The "Root" effect prevents the enemy's movement.
As shown in the image on the right, using certain skills on rooted enemies may reduce the cooldown of the skill or let the skill to be re-cast once more consecutively.

Skills and Artifacts

Artifacts allow players' process of finding "the best synergy" more variety and fun.



As an example, an artifact called "Rays of White Light" which instantly removes the disables effect goes very well with a skilled called "Hyper Beam".

As described above, a skill called "Hyper Beam". eliminates dangerous situation and increase its utilization
We hope it will be a lot of fun experience to consider how you can defeat your enemies most efficiently!

As of Early Access, 5 weapons, 80+ skills, and 100+ artifacts will randomly show up during the game.
Finally, let's watch the gameplay video that will show how you can play with synergy mentioned as an example above.

something is weird about that punch animation. I've watched it about 100 times now and I think it's the wind up. it starts up fast then nearly stops, finally going into an attack that drops down but is supposed to have the force move forward. Does time really slow down, or is this fake? I feel like it should work if the real time animation is correct, but with only two characters it's hard to see time actually slowing down.

Yes, it is not real time animation. It was reproduced at a time speed of 40%
But even at normal speed, it slows down when she jumps. This is our unique method which is exaggerated action technique.

In this post, we are going to talk about how our team put efforts to integrate rogue-like elements inside "Sentimental K".


What is the Rogue-like genre?

Rogue-like is a subgenre of games that inherits the features and systems of Rogue.
Rogue-like game is characterized by permanent death, character-driven, procedurally generated levels, turn-based gameplay, tile-based graphics and so on.

The core features of the Rogue-like genre that we adopted are:
1. Each gameplay is completely random via procedurally generated levels
2. Repeated gameplays by permanent death


Randomness

Having a random element means that each gameplay will be uniquely different
And our game "Sentimental K" also includes many kinds of random elements.


1. Battle System (Map / Monsters)

During the gameplay, players will travel through multiple consecutive rooms.  
While traveling, players must defeat various types of monsters to proceed with your journey further.
However, you won't be able to predict which kinds of monsters you will face until the actual encounter.
Sometimes traps may await, or a very strong enemy may show up.
Even though it is difficult to predict what will come next, preparing for the next enemies would be helpful for survival.

2. Non-Battle system (Encounter / Vending machine / Rest camp)

Not every room consists of battle areas.
Occasionally, players will encounter events or vending machine, which you could spend golds picked up from defeated enemies.
You can also take a rest at a campsite to restore life and increase the character's stats.
But don't let your guard down! Random elements are also part of these harmless areas. So please make the best judgment depending on the situation.

<In some cases, running away could be a good option.>


3. Farming system (Gold / Weapon / Skill / Artifact)

As your journey proceeds, players will acquire various goods
Players can acquire weapons with randomly assigned level and type, and can also acquire skills randomly assigned grade.
When you obtain the desired artifact unexpectedly, it will be more than a pleasure.
Earn more golds, get a much stronger weapon, well-organized skill-set, more helpful artifacts to reach the end of your journey!

<Even though the class of artifacts is the same, there are artifacts that better suit player's current situation.>


Permanent Death

The word may not be clear to understand, but it simply means that 'Lose everything upon death'.
Weapons, skills, goods, and stats acquired during play are all lost upon the player's death.
Because you won't be able to reload the saved data after death, players must play carefully.
Through this system, the player's immersion is maximized and accumulated play experiences and judgments will lead to better results in the next play.

Accomplishing various achievements while playing will unlock new weapons, skills, and artifacts.
However, repeated plays won't strengthen the main character's stats permanently.
Instead of the main character's growth, the player's growth will give greater immersion to the game.

In this Devlog, we'd like to introduce the basic system of weapons and the characteristics of each weapon.


The basic system of weapons

During gameplay, slaying enemies require multiplex elements.
But the most vital element is the level and the type of equipped weapon.

If players want to become stronger, you may need to carefully consider the level of the weapon.
It is the most important factor since the damage and life increases as the level of weapon go up.

The action style also changes its form depending on the type of weapon you use.
Depending on the type of weapon, the dash style, and special attack are transformed.
And the special attack supports the skills of each weapon class.
For this reason,  even though the level of weapon is lower than other choices, sometimes it might be better to use the weapon you need related to current skill sets.


Characteristics of each weapon


1. Broadsword

Broadsword is the most balanced weapon in this game, and it is equipped as a basic weapon at the beginning of the adventure.
Because dash style moves and evades long distances, and this helps on both survival and attack.
By using a special attack that moves closer to nearby enemies, it is easy to create combo attacks.
Make your battles easier by moving swiftly with dashes and special attacks.



2. Greatsword

Greatsword has slow attack speed, but it is specialized at slaying multiple enemies with area attacks
Special attack shoots strong shockwave forward, and it gets stronger as players charge the special attack.
Wipeout enemies with powerful damage, high life point, and the area of attack.



3. Dual Pistols

Dual pistols have low damage and life point, but players can eliminate enemies at a safe distance.
During emergencies, players can use a special attack to evade enemies' attacks by moving through space.
Eliminate enemies effectively by using attack and evasion at the right time.



4. Whip

Whip has a medium attack range and fast attack speed. Using a whip, players can constantly afflict enemies while maintaining distances from them.
Unlike other weapons, players can attack while the dash movement. Using dash, players can also adjust the distance from enemies by jumping briefly.
Special attack roots the enemies to snare their movement.
Take advantage of your enemies by utilizing various effects of the whip.



5. Gunspear

Gunspear is specialized at making enemies airborne, and its combo attack and several skills have airborne effects.
Special attack fires a beam from a gunspear and players can create combo on airborne enemies.
Neutralize enemies with unique effects of gunspear.

That's it! These five weapons are included in the early access version of Sentimental K.
As each weapon has unique characteristics, we hope that you enjoy various action styles using multiple weapons.

We will wrap up our 4th dev-log by introducing the in-game battle scene utilizing newly added artifacts.


Quantum Concentration: On a hit, fires quantum missiles that deal damages on enemies with a certain chance.
By using basic combo attacks, skills, and artifacts, execute multiple attacks or area of attack damages on enemies.
Your plays will be fascinating even more!
