Hello dear, and welcome to your first day at Croton Academy for Young Witches and Wizards! You're going to spend the next seven years learning the arcane arts under the finest magical tutelage in the world. Trust me, I remember my time there like it was yesterday. You can't go to Croton Academy without picking up a trick or two.

Though, not everything I learned was from the teachers. The castle grounds have a lot to offer. And the forest! You can find all sorts of potion ingredients there, just growing in the wild. Remember the stories I used to tell you of the baby salamanders, and their ever-burning embers? They live in the castle dungeons. And the flutterwing butterberries—there used to be a secret patch in my house commons.

Don't be afraid to just explore. There's so much—so, so much you don't know yet, and I can't wait for you to uncover it all.

And since you've got the creative gene that runs in the family, I know you'll find a few uses for this old trunk here. I know it doesn't look like much, but it's a family heirloom. I used it when I was at school, a lifetime ago. I passed it on to your dad when he went, too. My heart breaks that he's not here to pass it to you.

We never could figure out how to make the additional enchantments on it last longer than a few years, though. You'll find out what I mean soon enough. Just ask Flavo, the groundskeeper. He's an old friend and fellow mischief-maker.

I wish you the best of luck in your magical journey. You'll do great things, dear. I have no doubt you'll make me, and your late father, proud.

P.S. I think something may have moved into the trunk last night. Normally I'd take care of it, but now that the trunk is yours, you've got to earn its trust. Treat it well! It has feelings. Or maybe it doesn't and I'm just a cooky old witch—who knows?

Spellbent is an ARPG/farming sim/dungeon crawler game set in a school of magic where, from the depths of your magically expanded trunk, you will build your magical marketeering empire by selling goods to students (and, hey, maybe even faculty).

It's time for Monday Monsters! Every Monday we’re going to highlight a monster we’re working on—because what better way to tackle Monday than by dealing with a monster? Today we want to show you our initial design for the poltergeist in Wizardcraft and Witchery. This mischievous monster is going to cause loads of trouble for the young witches and wizards!

It’s time for Working Wednesday! Every Wednesday, we plan to post something that we’re either currently working on or have just finished. This week we want you to see the initial staging of our aviary tower entrance. There’s not a lot in it now, but more assets are being created to give this area the feeling of being a bird-powered postal service.


The aviary tower is the place where the player can send messages outside the castle and order marketeering goods or banned ingredients they might need. Or maybe just to send a message home.

It’ll be fun to look back on this post when the room is fully designed and staged with lighting!

Screenshot Saturday!

This week, we’ve been working on the design for the Lion House Commons.


The house commons will be the hub of activity, where you’ll be able to interact with other witches and wizards. You can sell your goods, buy items from other students, start quests for peers that need your help, and even study your magical abilities. Or, you know, just sit by the fire and read a nice, big tome on magical plants and potions.
We’re still working on lighting and shadows, and filling out the room to make it feel more lived-in. What would you want to do here? And how would you make it your home?

Monster Monday!

This week, we want to introduce the Soul Eater.


The Soul Eater is a dark creature that lurks in the shadows and drains the room of everything but misery. If you don’t defeat it quickly enough, it may even eat your soul. Young witches and wizards should avoid this creature at all costs.

We’re working on building out its attack and movement, but for now we have a simple stasis animation loop. We can’t wait to see how this creepy creature fits into the game!

We just figured out the watering mechanics for growing plants inside the player’s secret trunk. You’ll be able to grow basically whatever you want in here—as long as you can find the seeds.


Growing plants for potion ingredients, or just to sell, can be a big part of your black marketeering empire. We’re working on building out an entire world flora that you can grow in the secrecy of your dormitory. These plant sprites are VERY basic right now, but we’re going to work on making some beautiful forestry. Smiley

Screenshot Saturday!

We've been working on our forest dungeon this week, along with some of the monsters that the player might face within. This area will be filled with plants that can be gathered, items that can be found, and beasts that can be defeated. (Or befriended?)


Players will need to be on high alert while exploring! You never know what you might find.

We’re putting together an alpha demo that we’re sharing with testers next week, and we’ll be fixing things like making the grass tiles blend together and not stand out so much until then.

Monday Monsters!

We finished off the initial work for our hecator. A creature that players will inevitably face while exploring the forests surrounding the school.


Hecatorai, as seen above, are giant spiders with a name that means "hundred mouthed". Ferocious and venomous? You bet. Players should also take care to not get slowed down by their web shot. What do you think? Scary enough?

Our group of monsters has been growing quite a lot over the last few weeks. Here’s our werewolf!


Don’t worry. This beast can’t turn you into a werewolf (yet). But, maybe try to avoid crossing paths until you know the right spells to defeat it!
