Minimal mockup title screen for my project. I might consider making a more detailed font than 3x3, but I'm not entirely sure about it yet since this is pretty much the only text in the game outside of a small pause menu, and it's also somewhat iconic.

I think you should get the 'press a' thing to look more clear - right now I'm afraid some people will stare at it without ever figuring out what it says.
Regarding the rest of the screen I don't actually mind

Thank you for the comments. In a previous version, I used green for the a button, but. I later changed it to clean it up a bit and have it fit a basic aesthetic. I might try changing it to a single color of green later so it still fits the style while being more readable. There's also an alternative a character I might try using in which the top right corner is also present. It might be a tiny bit more readable.

I know the visual style you're going for, but the button just isn't readable. You could try having the actual button underneath the word 'press' so you can scale it up a bit so it's not so ambiguous.

It looks a bit better with the green button and white text. You should always try to keep your text the same color, otherwise it just clashes and looks weird.

@DustyDrake I've thought about that design, but personally I didn't really like the look of it. I've made several button variants, some old some new, in hopes of finding something both readable and fitting. I'll try seeing if I can come up with a few more, but I'm not sure which ones work or not, if any.

Unfortunately I don't think any of the 3x3 a's are readable in this context.

@Jerry: I made a 3x5 that was purty clear. @Sajextryus All the same, I think putting yourself to a 3x3 restriction in a game is just being selfish. People need to read what you have for them to read. Don't be an ass. Unless that's the overarching concept of the game or something.

Don't just use black and white on 3*3, use color and subpixel trick

@Jerry: I made a 3x5 that was purty clear. derek: yeah 3x5 is kinda nice, i find that 5 pixels is pretty much minimum height to make out every letter clearly (i've made tiny fonts a lot myself) 5x5 is my fav though. also this @Sajextryus All the same, I think putting yourself to a 3x3 restriction in a game is just being selfish. I spent a minute repeating this phrase out loud lol it's readable and you're totally right about the low-res fonts, usability > looks(?)

@Peanutbuttershoes That's exactly why I was considering making a larger, more detailed font. Also, this is the only text I have planned for the entire project aside from a pause screen. There's no dialog or text in the gameplay outside of possibly a few button representations. I've messed with 5x5 fonts before, but I'll try designing some better text that could fit here later tonight.
