Guys, I just wanted to say this thread is absurdly awesome, you're all really talented. I especially love the Gameboy-like mockups. Keep the fantastic job, everyone.

Mockups of the first area in my game.
I was trying to decide which environment would be better and drew several variations. Tongue

My reactions:
First screenshot: Kiss
Second screenshot: Kiss
Third screenshot: Kiss
"Mockups of the first area in my game.": Tears of Joy

Finally, someone who actually makes the game he posts great mockups of!

Ah, and: Second one for me, too.
Thank you!

I wanted to make Jungle, Ruins, and Ocean variations too, because I really can't decide what to make the game's overworld. 6______9

If you can't settle on one do an overworld and an underworld so you can have two.

It's fantastic.  I still think the characters should be more saturated or something so they stick out.  As it is, the trees are the major focal points due to their vibrancy and the guy at the far right house, for example, is nearly invisible.

I didn't even notice there were 2 other characters on the right half of the mockup. Anyway, I'm really not liking the look of those windows.

The last one looks kind of La Mulana-ish though, aughfbk
That's excellent.
I was wondering recently what would be the best way to scale up the oldschool 2D sprite style for higher resolutions (because all the attempts I've seen so far suck). You know the style of the arcade games, it's difficult upping the resolution on them without going too realistic or too cartoony and losing some of the original style.
and I think this is the answer to my question. Gentleman

I loved the character on the first one, but I also liked the style almost without outlines of the last one a lot. The background of the of the last one is also gorgeous, the contrast between the mountains and the river gives a beautiful effect.

My eyes want to play this game.

I think I just might!
And while I'm at it, I'll actually pixel the thing instead of hand-drawing it in GraphicsGale.

I loved the character on the first one, ...
Pssst,
they're all the same character with a different costume, but thank you.  Gentleman

THE IDEA: A game that seeks to recapture the spirit of the original Pokemon Red and Blue while also being a boatload more silly and humorous. (EDIT: Not a fangame! Just a homage. I wouldn't be using any Nintendo properties.)

THE MOCKUP: I didn't sprite the actual monsters yet because I don't have any ideas nor do I feel like getting too into the project right now. But here's the battle UI mockup:

(Note that Red and Blue aren't even my favorite Pokemon games - but in addition to having the biggest nostalgia factor, they had the best "catch 'em all" mentality with only 151 of the little bastards. Plus working in greyscale is fun.)

Awesome Ben. The background seems a little hard to read though. Are those waves, or clouds? They seem a little high up for waves.

Huh?

They're clouds, I never saw them as waves before. Undecided
And here I was more worried that the water in the background might be construed as foreground water, haha.
