http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2778a contest for games which you have previously abandoned. you win $5 just for finishing a game you had previously left unfinished. you win $25 if it's the "most improved" and another $25 if it's the "best game". any engine/platform is allowed. hosted by james paige, creator of the ohrrpgce engine edit: james was asking for people to richen the pot of prizes, so i offered to add a free (digital download) copy of my game immortal defense to anyone who finishes an unfinished game for this contest -- so now it's $5 and an indie game

Those rules are kinda.. I dunno. How can they tell if you really worked on a unfinished game? Someone could just submit a game they have actually been working on and win the compo with an entry that they actually finished or intended to finish all along, all while disguising it as abandonware.

true, but my thought is, if someone wants to lie and go through all that trouble for $5, that's their karma -- i think it'd still make the contest worth it for the sake of the majority of honest folk who will just use this contest as a way to finally finish a game they had abandoned

wow, I have such trouble finishing games, and so many unfinished projects that I should finish that this contest would be great for me.

Wouldn't it have to be unfinished for you to finish it, pretty much by definition? Just sayin'. Cute contest idea though.

i think it's more for games that you once were working on but had abandoned long ago, not for actively unfinished projects in development

Are there any constraints on what game should be like? I mean, if I finish my abandoned pong clone does that qualifies as a valid entry?

Good contest! I don't think I should simply take advantage of the prizes offered for a community I don't participate in though.
I'm in for free ID though.

This is a great idea, and I would participate, except I'm still trying to finish games I haven't abandoned!

I'm in the same boat This is a fantastic contest idea. I'm gonna poke around in my old QBasic projects and see if there's anything worth another look!

Bah. I the whole thing. I could start from scratch, but that isn't finishing something.

the idea is that the community would vote on whether your game really is "finished" or not. with most games this is pretty easy -- i.e. does it have an ending, credits, and are all the levels/areas in it? if so, then it's finished. with games like pong it might be harder, but as long as you could actually play a full game and it felt like a finished game (with a title screen, sound effects, game modes, and everything) it'd probably be voted as 'complete'

Aha, that's a good way to determine completeness of the game. I've probably missed that part in the forum announcement.

I love this idea - a great incentive to complete a game.
