Ooh, I always wanted to play that one! Another ugly-awesome game I wanted to try was Tail of the Sun, a caveman adventure/sim, where the goal was to build a tower to the sun made out of mammoth tusks. I like the Japanese title: "Wild, Pure, Simple Life"

But they are done in bits 3 bits for the actual colour, one per RGB, which makes 8 colours, and then 1 bit for intensity, which is handled in characters, which is why you can only have light or dark blocks. Doing this you can NOT have different colours easily.
Well, yeah, hence the comment that it was poorly designed, I think. More like cheaply. Afaik most of the stuff in the speccy is from the shelf hardware, which also explains the mass amount of eastern european clones. The C64 uses pretty much only custom built hardware.

Q. Are we not men? A. We are voxels. Screenshots never do Outcast justice for just how weird/good it looked live. I played that one. It basically used only software rendering (from what I heard) so it could run on practically any computer, and it did some CRAZY things in its engine to keep it running fast. When trying to play it on my new computer the game runs in such a high framerate it becomes unplayable. Somebody forgot to code some speed caps there.

One of the neat things about Outcast is that it used cinematic depth-of-field effects and antialiasing long before anybody ever talked about having these capabilities in hardware. The DOF effects were actually used to draw attention to things in the background.

Aw man, I totally rented that back in the day. It left some kind of impression on me, although I can't remember if I ever understood it. :] A pretty harsh review of it.

The game that made me want to make a tower defense game. Also I'm surprised Snood isn't on this thread yet.

Hahaha, oh god. I remember playing a demo of that game on my friends PC. It was supposed to have this new revolutionary mechanic where you actually had to reach out and pick up new weapons, but it was more like waving a false arm around and you'd always end up smacking the weapon off the edge of the platform you were on. :D
