Vikings Hnefatafl: Kings of the Dark Age is an upcoming turn-based strategy based on the ancient Scandinavian board game, hnefatafl.

For a long time, I've wanted to make a game based on vikings. Now, after the two previous projects The Finnish War (https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=69704.0) and Sotidrokhima (https://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=69847.0) have been finished and released, I could finally start working on this idea.

The game is already well underway, with basic gameplay all being implemented. Much of the work now lies with audiovisuals, adding maps, and playtesting - lots of playtesting.

Vikings Hnefatafl is based on the viking board game, but takes some liberties in gameplay. Simplified, the aim of a hnefatafl match is to capture the enemy king without losing yours, playing on a (usually) 9x9 or 11x11 grid board. In Vikings Hnefatafl, some things are added:
  • different types of 'units' (pieces) which have their own Strength value, indicating on how many sides they need to be surrounded to be captured
  • terrain: different terrain types increase or decrease the Strength of certain units (pieces)

The game will have a small campaign, detailing the Viking conquest of England, and Custom Battles for single player and perhaps two-players (hotseat) as well.
I'm planning to add a giant amount of randomized map seeds for Custom games, to have a lot of replayability. The AI will have 3 difficulty levels; easy to very hard.

Here's how a game of Hnefatafl basically proceeds:


Both sides begin the game with the same number of pieces, and a King + Castle.
NOTE: Size of the board, and the amount of pieces can be customized.


It's a good move to put the King safe in the Castle. Notice the flag when King's home! (also customizable!)


AI is starting to move on the offense.


By this point, we've destroyed two of the AI's pieces.


AI is going all-out, surrounding the King. He doesn't need much more to take the Castle.


In the end, we destroyed all but three of the enemy pieces, meaning they were left without means to capture our King. We win! Achievements screen is looking a bit off-center at the moment, but I thought it was a nice addition after a match.

Recent work done for Hnefatafl:

  • All units added to both playable Factions (Viking and Saxon)
  • All terrain types added + Unit buffs and debuffs related to them
  • (Vastly!) improved AI


Here's the Custom Battle setup menu as it looks now.


Here's all the three types of units (Pieces) from both factions.


Under siege by the AI enemy (Vikings). Notice the Finnish flag hoisted in my Castle! (customizable!)

Didn't get any screens of the different Terrain types into this post yet, but they're waiting to be included into more maps at the moment anyways. That'll be for the next post!
