I feel bad for the kind of hippie university types who when helping building the foundations of the internet had a much more idealistic view of what they were building. It would have been nice to have that kind of free information space.

Parts of the old style of web still exist as those independent sites that link to each other, it's just kind of sad the people made it a game and "science" to exploit the algorithm to maximize the visibility of their sites of what was supposed to be the gateway to those sites with little to reach from

I know there are good people out there firsthand. I had to dig and dig on the algorithm which wanted to show me spammers and all kinds of regurgitated memes instead of cool people who want to make friends. Sadly, good people get marginalized because they are not cost effective. "Let's spend more resources getting it right even though it cuts into the profit margin" is a death sentence. And a lot of the well-meaning hippy politics has been co-opted into a form of bullying.

Yeah, I assumed that was a large part of it. Profits get in the way of social responsibility. Then become really dangerous when a service becomes the lens in which people see the world.

Here's a good bit about the big alphabet:

When big companies spend more money on keeping control instead of trying to compete for having the best product, you're gonna have a bad time.

A little tangential:

article about a paranoid musk suing about advertisement boycot

It's never clear if there is an orchestrated conspiracy or people just are all put off by the same thing. Twitter let all kinds of crazy racist conspiracy theory shit fly and advertisers boycotted. I don't use twitter anymore. It's not because I got some kind of secret email from a cabal of space lizards. I just saw what direction the site was going in and gave it up.

Edit: And I think all my railing on the indie elite is probably misguided... in a way. I like a lot of stuff that is dated or not the direction a lot of powerful people want the world to move in. If I had my way the entire universe would be building some kind of giant obelisk to my glory. I'm willing to concede that is not so great of a life ambition, but maybe getting a paycheck would be a nice change of pace for some of the stuff I've made and not being told "Oh it's all just luck, now leave me alone."
