Hi everyone!
I'm new here and figured this would be a great place to share some of my development journeys to get some thoughts and feedback from you guys.
My team and I recently launched our Kickstarter - Piratopia: Raiders of Pirate Bay, it's an action-adventure multiplayer where you sail across the Seven Seas recruit crew mates, upgrade your ships, and fight badass sea monsters. ⚔️
So in this dev blog, I will be sharing one of our feistiest recruitable pirates -
Polly Pauper!Character LoreAs close to pirate royalty as they come, Polly Pauper was born and raised on a ship and taught to ‘plunder and never be plundered’. With the ferocity of a shark and a tongue as sharp as a cutlass, Polly has carved a reputation for herself on the high seas despite her tender age (mighty things can come in small sizes!). A member of the infamous faction “Brotherhood of the Black Flag”, Polly abides by their strict code of never turning down an opportunity, never betraying her crew, and never taking advantage of the weak!
Game Design WIP - Polly Pauper's Skills
Despite her young age, impatient personality, and relative lack of experience in prolonged naval battles, Polly makes up for it with quick reflexes and is a natural specialist of high-speed 'hit-and-run' tactics.
Key Attributes:- Buff your ship acceleration
- Buff your rifleman’s rate of fire
Good For: - Short-range skirmishes
- Encounters where evasive moves are advantageous
Character Design
All our crew needed highly-distinctive personas, and we settled on “cute and deadly” for Polly. She would have a hair-trigger temper, barrels of sass, and maybe a fouler mouth than a teen should, especially when she thinks anyone is slighting her or questioning her abilities.
Polly Pauper - Early Concept Art for Poses

Next, we moved on to her visual and character design. Experimenting with poses is a critical part of our creative process to define a character’s personality and temperament, and gives us more opportunities to highlight or uncover key elements and traits!
Polly Pauper - Shortlisting with refined linework
The last step is refining linework and going into the details to tweak specific elements in the pose, colorways and costume. Often, we also have to line a new character up against existing ones to check for and prevent overlaps and similarities.

That's all folks, if you made your way to the end of this dev blog, you're super awesome! And thank you for taking the time to read about this. I hope to bring you guys more BTS content and blogs so do let me know your thoughts (whether it's Polly Pauper's design or even the dev blog content itself!!)
