About a year ago, I started down the path of making a multiplayer zombie shooter -- and while that was a very interesting project, I realized that I actually wanted to make a role playing game. So here it is, a year later -- built atop the same platform!

Features:
- Open(ish) world exploration
- Realtime combat
- Multimember party system
- Inventory system
- Traders
- Night / day cycle
- Light "quest"
- Fully multiplayer

Please check it out. I'd love to hear your thoughts about it, and how I could improve on the game.

  • Do the combat mechanics feel right?
  • Are the music and sound effects correctly meshed with the world?
  • Were you confused by the user interface? Especially the inventory system?
  • Did you know what to do next?

Hey rachoac,

I played your game

What I liked:
- The art looks really good.  The animations look good as well.
- I ran into another player and we chatted for a bit.  It was fun.
- You've solved the survival crafting game problem.  With a lot of survival crafting games once you have a safe area and a consistent source of food: there is nothing else to do.  The mechanics of building a small army and raiding fortresses is a good way to overcome this problem.

What could use some work:
- I was rubber banding so bad it almost made the game unplayable.  Your netcode needs to be smoothed out quite a bit.
- The combat is a little dull.  If the emphasis is on crafting and building your army then it's probably okay.
- There were a couple of bugs.  Some world tiles didn't load.  Sometimes objects would appear in the wrong rendering layer.

Overall it has a lot of potential.  I hope it does well for you!

Hi jbarrios,

Thank you for checking out the game, I appreciate the feedback. I feel encouraged that the pivot I made away zombie shooter has resulted in something that is fun.

Regarding the rubberbanding -- would you mind letting me know what part of the world you were playing from? In terms of United States, east or west coast, etc. The server is in the US west coast, so I wonder if that could have contributed to the rubber banding!

Yeah I need to spice up the combat a bit, its definitely a challenge for me to figure out which mechanics / features to deepen.

Thanks again!

Samsara

I've made some major changes to Samsara since my last post here!

* Performance and bugfixes
* Mining and dungeons
* Dungeon minimaps
* More powerful weapons (longsword, saber, greataxe)

Its a browser game, so you can try it right away. I'm curious to see what folks think of the mining mechanics.

Couple new updates!

I've increased the viewport size, so you can see more of the world at once:

Strongholds have had a facelift, and there are a few varieties:

The castle stronghold now needs castle keys to open. You get those from other strongholds:

Feedback greatly appreciated!

* Is it fun?
* If you tried it and wanted to quit right away -- what made you want to do that?
* I was trying to make a decision about whether or not to polish existing things so more, or continue adding more features, such as adding a building mechanic. What would you do in my place?

Was never experienced with games like these, so admittedly had a struggle figuring out beginner's basics. Didn't know exactly how to make a fire, or if I even had the materials I needed in my inventory. Ended up wandering around all night fighting stuff and eventually picking up the required sticks, fortunately. It's nice that the companion advises you on what you should do, though for those who are totally clueless, consider also including how to do things as well, UI steps, etc.

I can see the appeal in the gameplay loop for this, however I don't think I was able to get a firm grip on all the gameplay aspects and what my ultimate goal would be. I had fun fooling around, but not from actually accomplishing tasks.

Any urge I had to stop playing would probably have been because of a lack of direction and understanding, but as mentioned, I'm not one to usually play these kinds of games, so I can't even say for certain what makes other people fans of survival/open-world titles.

As for next steps, personally I'd polish what can be polished before adding more features. However, if an additional feature is something you'd consider a big selling point that would give the game its own identity, then I could see merit in adding that first.

It's a cool project and it was fun seeing how another dev uses the LPC sprites. They're so versatile. Best wishes on further updates.

After yet another long hiatus, I've re-started work on my action rpg, Project Samsara. In this current spike, I've started to drill down on a primary mechanic, which is combat.

Here's what it looks like to fight skeletons:

Whats new is way the enemies telegraph their attacks. I'm not sure if I'm doing it right.

Please check out the game here, if you're able to try it live:
