there was also a freeware top down game with similar movement style like in BOH.
just forgot the name. (i think it started with T... or B... but im not sure)
came across like a dos game where you only saw the stuff that were in your sight.
it had some sort of a 3d engine and was mission based.

Could it possibly be Tapan Kaikki 4: Bloodshed?
thanks, thats the game.

Hi,

Not sure if it's really what you're looking for, but I was wondering if you might enjoy Shadowgrounds... 3D graphics but top-down viewpoint, and no mouse aiming if I remember correctly.  BUT the screen does rotate so if that bugs you maybe not.  You might check the demo though.

Take No Prisoners  Kiss

this game made me do weird dreams during 1997...

there was also another one by Raven, fantasy themed, they used the same engine

You're thinking of Mageslayer, I'm guessing?

I love Mageslayer, it's a very fun game. Pretty hard though.

Never played Take No Prisoners, but it looks damn fun. Hand Any Key :D Hand Joystick

Edit: Also Assault Trooper might be of interest, though it's from isometric point of view, not top-down.

Maybe Theseus? It might not be quite what you want... It pretty much boils down to you vs. epic wave after wave of monsters, with survival only possible with the continual discovery of larger and more ridiculously devastating weaponry. It's not the best game I've played, but it can be fun for a while.

I used a mouse, but I think it supports gamepads.

I don't think

have been mentioned yet. I like it because you can play the missions in any order, and you get to buy weapons rather than just picking them up on the playfield.

Druid and Ranarama are two Gauntlet clones.

Smash TV? There's an excellent (although politically incorrect) top down shooter.

You're right, Shadowgrounds DID use mouse aiming... I could have sworn I played it with keyboard only, sorry about that.

You're right.. Sad

Though i do think alien breed done in the angle of chaos engine would have been great, still, i am making a game a little like that...(very slowly)

I'm not so sure if such an angle would have worked well, because alien breed had lots of small corridors... so to clearly see whats going on, the camera needs to be top-down. Or did you mean something else?

How about 'Zombies Ate My Neighbour' from 1993 by the one and only Konami?

Good luck with the development.

BOFH: Servers Under Siege is pretty good, but I can't find a download link for the PC version (which is better than the c64 version): http://www.homeoftheunderdogs.net/game.php?id=3994

[Edit: wait, this version of HOTU appears to work http://www.hotud.org/home/43-action/23683 ]

I'm working on the art for an "Alien Breed" type of game called "Dysnomia". Should be out on XBIG in another month or so.

Winged Gear is quite fun and the music is great. The graphics may not be the best but not the worst either.

I'm afraid it's not very much like Alien Breed though...
I think it has native joypad support. I'm not sure...

Looks nice; hopefully there will be more than just giant worms to kill in the final version though.
