All communities lose steam over time. I do tend to lurk but life made me a busy man… I cannot be as active as I once were, unfortunately.
There are still good posts. Each time I pass by, I still see people trying to share their games and dev tricks.  Beer!
So, as the old saying goes…

Well, I thought I'd check it out after being absent for ages, and missing indie-forum culture. Not a fan of transient nature of other social media.

So, how dead is it here?
I'm happy to start posting again if there are a few peeps here. Maybe even old friends!

I'm a relatively new member (joined last year) and I like the "slowness" here. I like to click the "show posts unread since you last came" and it's just short enough that I can see most of them instead of being overwhelmed.

I feel like you can get lost in a big community like discord. I think people use twitter, tiktok, gamejolt, reddit, itch.io, steam and youtube now and build communities around an existing game being developed, so I think there's definitely an active and huge gamedev community elsewhere. But there's something cozy about forums and I quite like it being smaller so you can know people better and you can stumble upon new devlogs. I think a forum feels more personal, while social media feels more like marketing for your game.

absolutely! Big fan of this also, that's why I'm saying small communities are always better.

What did the "golden age" mean to you guys?
People being excited about each others games. It still happens, I believe or really hope so, I haven't posted anything game related in years, but for me that was the reason I fell in love with this place. It really helped me push through some dark times, as corny as it sounds, it's one of the pillars of my continuous pursuit of making games.

I checked out a few places before deciding to lay roots here.  A lot of these places have a a culture of negativity, and not in a constructive way.  I think they are more after a reaction or upvotes than actually helping each other.
Yas queen! "fingersnap" I hate this new culture with a passion, there is no honesty, vulnerability, only this gross, make you wanna cringe-curl into the shower cabin, facade.
I hope tig won't ever get infected by this plague and will keep fostering what it did so far. But i guess it's up to us to keep it that way Gentleman

I feel you man. However tig feels like a good old friend, you can be MIA for years and still come back whenever like you never left in the first place. Cheers to this community, you lovely, lovely weirdos. Feels like home! Beer!

I am happy this gets discussed.
I started a devlog in 2014 and here found it super useful for all the feedback I got.
Very motivating and enjoyable.

I also lurked in the last few years where I was much more active in the Stencyl web forum which is even a smaller group compared to Tig. The Szncyl web forum died completely in the last years and the whole crowd moved to its Stencyl discord which is very active and replicates the activity of the web forum. Devlogs are a bit more difficult now because I think that the overall usage of stuff like this has changed and also the attention span. Its easy to get feedback on specific gifs and videos but people wont read too much text anymore for example.

I was surprised when I now started a new devlog here on Tig that the Tig discord is so calm because I expected a lot folks just moved there. Well....we will see. I am now feeding a new devlog and will report Smiley

This place still has a good vibe but I wish adding images and stuff to posts would just be easier nowadays Wink

Yeah, TIG's dead. Or, at least, mortally wounded. Unless old forums suddenly become popular on TikTok (god, I hope they don't...), I think the new generation of internet users have moved on past web forums.

This may come off as a bit weird, but I actually don't mind that. It's like TIG is stuck in the time before the internet became the addictive, monopolistic hellscape that it is now. Hell, there's still an option to put your AIM nickname in your profile.

I'm kinda bummed I wasn't here for the golden era, but I'm sure TIG's twilight years will still be enjoyable.

This! Absolutely this. That's why I desperately hope to keep it alive for ever. A hub for the 90's kid, even if you're born later, earlier, or you've always been, this is that cool bench you find in that park nobody visits, where people with similar interests also join from time to time. It's neat af. It's worth preserving.

It's a bummer that Derek, the guy who made the cool bench forgot about that bench, but life is life, maybe one day he will at least drop by. Scribble with a bold pen somewhere on the back D+Games=<3

I lurked for a while because Photobucket broke my avatar and I felt naked without one. It took hours to figure out that I needed to connect to http and not https  Facepalm

It looks like Tigsource died a long time ago and that this is just the post-apocalyptic ruins. I guess I came here to just dump devlogs somewhere that wasn't Twitter, Threads, Hashnode, LinkedIn or whatever hell. But I find the ruins really cozy. And the community is different! It's some of the old people I don't recognize, lots of new folk.

I still come here once in a while, usually when I have a game to announce.
I feel the nostalgia from before, but a vibrant community takes energy to vibrate. And energy is dangerous if not kept in check. somehow, I'm happy that it mellowed into a slow moving form rather than exploding into some kind of toxic ingroup.

I'm sorry to inform you, Michael, but you are working for a company where Videodrome is, like, a foundational document. See: https://letterboxd.com/doomlaser/list/video-references-inspiration-for-doomlaser/

I can discuss why the scene is cool, but that would be a
spoiler
. Ask in the Discord, we can chat it out there  Cool

Still waiting for that check, lmao.

And I can see why Videodrome has merit as a piece of cinema, but it is not to my taste. Properly cooked, but not my kind of fun.

I had to drop basically everything circa 2015-2016 and embark on a meatspace adventure through Postal Service hell to moving halfway across the country, into healthcare administration during a pandemic and honestly, my life became more of a ridiculous "game" than anything I've had time to crack at in code or design since then. :/

I'm glad to see the hub is still around. Got mentioned in a YouTube video in passing recently and it kinda brought my attention back a moment.
