Quote
I think the system would be better if it rewarded people who work hard

Ok but this makes no sense in the context of indie game success. "The system" isn't an engineered algorithm like on social media, unless you count the steam store as the only way people hear about games. And even then, games that try to, well, game storefront algos with otherwise worthless slop will only get so far since they'll accumulate negative reviews and people will steer clear of them.

As a rule of thumb, "the system" is just people consuming and engaging with your art, and if people don't enjoy it, then that's their prerogative to not give you attention or recompense. Sure, things slip through the cracks all the time, but working hard on something that ultimately doesn't entertain people will not see success.

Even if the algorithm were in your favor, it wouldn't pick up your work because your work isn't good enough, at least not yet. You need to spend more time cultivating what you want to express and exercising your artistic skills so that one day you can make something that competently expresses interesting ideas and/or fun game mechanics. I realize that calling your work "unskilled" to your face is harsh, but it doesn't look like you realize how amateur your output is, so that's why people keep telling you this and it feels like personal attacks.

tl;dr, you're not good enough at what you do yet to complain about lack of exposure. Go back to the dojo and train more.

That's fine, we can table this for a few more years. As I've said, I'm not going anywhere, and I do still strive to get better.

The most helpful bits were the parts about how to improve as J-Snake and Thems mentioned some stuff about the actual work. The bit about making the lines cleaner is something I'll think about, at least.

Otherwise, the idea that "I want more" shouldn't be so offensive to you all, and most people wouldn't put up with things like photoshoped images of themselves or being called low-IQ or talentless. Even if I am a shitty artist, you guys are the ones who are a "bad hang" if that's how you behave around someone you think isn't "worthy" (Even if it is verifiably true that I'm just an awful slop artist.)

You're the one introducing concepts like worthiness into these conversations out of nowhere, and you should maybe think about whether that says something about your approach to asking peers for feeedback and advice. I think I can actually confidently say I speak for every participant when I say you're frustrating as hell to try to talk to which is why you get frustrated responses after a while.

I think there may be a point making a thread where you ask for a particular work you ahve made (wether your "game dev feedback" videos) and ask for feedback. Call it "Roast my work" for maximum engagement. (I get you want feedback on your work and it may help everyone asking more directed fieedback on things where you feel there is room for improvement)

I may do a roast thread if I'm a bit bolder. I'll admit there is room for improvement in literally every creative thing I've done in my life. So I'm not saying I'm some kind of perfect adonis. I just want to clarify that. Nor do I think I'm the best artist in history, making works better than Starry Night on a regular basis (or that I've ever made something in that ballpark.)

I don't want to be frustrating, but if it doesn't help me figure out what to do it is also frustrating to me. I know you guys are trying to help, and my wife often makes fun of my big head (though she is literally saying my head is large rather than an ego metaphor.)

I did try to at least make the lines a bit cleaner in this one.

Elon Musk

I understand that rough edges are off-putting to a lot of people. It's a compromise I can work on. It will take a few years for me to get better at habitually keeping the lines clean, and, I'd like to be a bit less frustratingly opaque in how my symbolism works. I can accept that these are things to focus on. I also am trying to do some more of my style art as a 3d popup book inside my Hundred Bullets game for the backgrounds which I never totally nailed.

It would really help my general mental state if it were opaquer on the other end: knowing better reasoning on why things fail and so on more than just stuff about my mom being wrong to praise me, lol.

When I have no say in who gets to see what I make, and I get very little feedback about the actual work, it becomes easy to spin off into an unpleasant place.
