Having grown increasingly dissatisfied with the sausage gaming experiences offered in the current market, I decided to take matters into my own hand. Introducing Weenie (working title), a sausage platformer. Been working on this for a few weeks. Aiming to satisfy people who like silly games (goat simulator, qwop) and difficult platformers. Currently working on the character and camera, hoping to jump onto level design soon so that I can figure out what this lil sausage can do in his tiny world. Oh yeah, the whole game will hopefully take place in a museum. Will be uploading test builds here : https://alvarop.itch.io/sausageCurrently looking for feedback on the controls. Current goals : * Improve camera * Figure out level design and context for gameplay * Feedback and game feel

Hah, I came in here expecting this to be awful, but I watched the video & I'm pleasantly surprised - I actually kinda like the aesthetic too; museums & galleries have a weird comfortable vibe while also allowing for abstract level design using the exhibits.
I think the only suggestion I'd make is maybe a mechanic where the ends of the sausage become sticky to attach to a surface, so it can effectively grab lifts and dangle as they move around.

I've been considering this. Not sure how to approach it but I'm gonna give it a try. It could really expand the gameplay possibilities for sure. Thanks for giving it a chance even if it seemed off-putting

I think if it were me I'd have 1 button that when held made both ends sticky, then let the player do what they want with that if it suits them.

Jumping on the YouTube devlog thing. Didn't take long to make and it's a quick look on what the game is about and progress so far.
Check it out!

I like the art gallery setting. Would surprised patrons be too complex?
I think a cool style reference could be the kinds of situations that emerge in something like Katamari Damacy. Also McPixel is an indie in a similar absurd zone

I think I could use the context of an art gallery to make hazards and weird geometry as "the art" being shown.
Surprised patrons might be a bit too much for me, as I don't animate and I'm not great at art. I'll be gathering assets or hiring an artist eventually, but I want to keep the cost low.
What I meant for context was more specifically what time of level design. I think right now it's bit too sparse, needs to be more dense and ask for more precision.
Some people told me a good idea would be to add a jump mechanic, where you fling the sausage. Might be an interesting option to add some risk reward... I'm looking into it.

I'm sure these 10 sausage games don't satisfy your cravings for salted meats: Fork N Sausage: This is a zany puzzle game where you navigate a lively sausage through a series of wacky obstacles to reach your fork. It features hundreds of levels with tricky physics puzzles and lots of humor.
Sausage Legend: In this game, you get to choose from a variety of sausages and enter them into battles. From classic hot dogs to more exotic sausages, there are 26 different types you can take into the fray.
Sausage Wars.io: This is a battle arena game where you control a sausage and fight against other sausages to be the last one standing. It’s a fun and chaotic game with a lot of action.
Sausage Flip: This game involves flipping a sausage through various levels filled with obstacles. It’s a skill-based game that requires precision and timing.
Stephen’s Sausage Roll: This is a challenging puzzle game where you have to grill sausages perfectly by rolling them around on a grid. It’s known for its difficulty and unique gameplay mechanics.
Run Sausage Run!: In this game, you control a sausage trying to escape from a kitchen filled with deadly obstacles. It’s a fast-paced and humorous game that you can play solo or with friends.
Sausage Man: This is a battle royale game with a twist – all the characters are sausages! It’s a fun and quirky take on the genre, with cartoon-style graphics and imaginative gameplay.
Sausage Game: This is a silly and spicy adventure where a cinema sausage makes a break for freedom. It’s a fun and lighthearted game that you can play for free.
Sausage Bomber: This is a fun and explosive game where you control a sausage bomber plane and drop sausages to destroy enemy targets. It’s a quirky and entertaining game with lots of action.
Sausage Sports Club: This is a physics-based party game where you play as different sausage animals competing in various sports and mini-games. But what about the current Sausage offerings dissatisfied you? Edit: it seems like a trend to make sausage games to me.

What I meant for context was more specifically what time of level design. I think right now it's bit too sparse, needs to be more dense and ask for more precision.
One thing you could do is try and prevent the sausage from being cooked or eaten. It could have visions or nightmares about the fate of most sausages, and the always-closer-than-you-think end that could meet it. When I first saw this, I immediately thought of barbecue scenarios where other sausages are being grilled, and the hijinks required to outwit that fate. Re: 3d characters. There are a suprising amount online. I recently did a project where I used models from TuboSquid, Sketchfab, and for characters, the program Character Creator, from Reallusion—there's quite a lot of free characters and other content, before you have to pay. You can work with a real artist later, but you can get really far with programs and sites like these. and there are a ton of free 3d character animations you can download for free from Adobe's Mixamo

This looks ridiculous, and I mean this in a good way. I have a hard time imagining what core gameplay you could get out of this, apart from the movement. That one is quite nice already, but it only carries for like 3 minutes.
Maybe put puddles of sprinkles/crumbs where the sausage can roll through in order to get a coating. Maybe that could lend special powers to overcome puzzles with. And then you'd need to avoid actual puddles as that would wash off your crust.
And I like the name. "Weenie" is tongue-in-cheek and already sets the mood just fine for a ridiculous experience.

Sausage in an art gallery.... I want to enter a painting. Maybe as a sausage you take "ownership" of two paintings and they become portals into each other, and this can be used to dynamically create shortcuts for some greater purpose. You can then swap out ownership with a new painting to make the latest 2 paintings be portals into each other. Just a random idea

I like the idea but it sounds pretty out of scope, but it made me think about how paintings will be important in the game in some ways... I'll have to give this a think.

That hot dog mona lisa bit in the video is so funny! I like what you say about how the art exhibits can lead to interesting level design, and I've always been a fan of getting-over-it style games. From what you say and have shown so far, seeing your artistic process and motivation manifest is exciting.
