I dare say! Whilst I was drifting through my usual orders of the day (clicking my "Stumble!" button), I found this here motivational poster, and I do believe it is quite relevant - In fact, it might be a fellow TIGer, if I'm not mistaken!

I suppose I've been horribly wrong about this, but I always figured adding 'ington' to the end of my name would do :|
Prefixing with 'Earl' or 'Baron' is a pretty good start. Also, suffixing with 'ingtonsborough' add some gentlemanly class. Doesn't it, Earl Gnarfingtonsborough?

Cheerio! I do say, all these unguarded gentlemanly pockets are enough to fill an artful dodger's wildest dreams! I tip my hat to you, sirs, and make my way out into the shadows.

I'm doing a paper for school on the history of Tigsource. Is this where the monocle meme originated or did it exist before that?

What, seriously? I think it was either Alec or Kinten who started the monocle thing. Not sure.

Not sure, but I think people started to use the "monocle-pop" joke at #tigirc, and then somebody (Derek?) changed the TIGSource logo on the front page... and it went downwards from there.

You're actually doing an essay on the history of TIGsource? For which subject?

As far as i was aware, Alec first used monocle-popping in a comment on a TIGs article on the front page.

Did it really originate here? The monocle+victorian memes seem really popular at the moment on many website, maybe there was another, more general source? (like a tv show or something like that)

As the Monocle is, naturally, the Eyepiece of Choice for the Distinguished Gentleman (or Gentlelady!), and we here at Tigsource are all Gentlemen (and Gentleladies!) of the Highest Distinction, the regular appearance of the monocle was quite inevitable.
Though I've noticed the use of monocles in other media (with the involvement of Gentlemen, undoubtedly!), this is the first place I've seen it used with such prevalence.
I hope this provides some assistance, my good Chutup!

You're actually doing an essay on the history of TIGsource? For which subject? Sorry, I was just joking. But I might actually do it someday. I love tracing the origins of memes and e-dramas. It's like, internet archaeology.

Shame to hear this isn't part of your official curriculum. I agree, however, looking into the origins of Memes and other such things is a Scholarly and Noble pursuit. Of Gentlefolk. What have you dug up so far?

What I think is the primary reason for monocle talk at TIGSource:
Glasses are mainstream.
Monocles are indy.

Well basically I figure memes are the building blocks of internet society. Because we are all essentially faceless on the internet except for a few personalised elements like name and sig, it's up to memes to unite us through recognition of common ground. They can unite groups as large as the entire internet (i.e. 'shoop da woop'), or groups based around a certain genre/media (gamers can all appreciate 'Still Alive', while anime fans will rally around 'Haruhiism'), or they can be incredibly specific memes that unite a small community whose common ground is that they were all present at the original event (i.e. 'DeeGeePen', 'HOW CARE AOUT THE GRAPHIC', 'Ridley is TOO BIG!'(btw you won't get that last one but for those who were there it was fucking hilarous)). This, I believe, explains why most memes are horribly unfunny. Their humour is just a way to worm into our psyche, and the reason they stay there is to bond us together. That's going to be the gist of my meme essay if I ever get around to writing it.

Memetics is a fascinating study. I read in some book somewhere about how memes (in the more traditional sense of the word, not just the internet LOLmeme sense) are very important for education.

You sure you don't mean mimetics here?
