Hey there Everyone! I'm Heriberto, Leader of Imagineer Games. I'm driving over to the GDC Austin this September, and To tell you the truth I feel rather Lost on many small details of it, mostly because I have not ever been to such an event before.

My goals there are to promote (and to seek funding for)our two projects. Shades of Violet (A PC adventure game) and Kingdom (An iPhone Visual novel game). I'm bringing:

Shades of Violet
- A Demo Cd and selling package consisting of the demo installer itself, a PDF Pitch document, and the design document/script/etc.

Kingdom (Iphone game)
- A brochure on it.

 -And a Gazillion Business cards.

I'm pretty much going on a wing and a prayer. But I'd like your opinion on what is the best way to make the most out of the event. Networking wise too. I'm not attending any conferences (Budget), but I have the general pass. I have yet to sit and plan the visit itself in terms of what will I do in the Convention Grounds.

Since I guess many of you guys have been in my place before, Can you help me out with your opinions? I'd also like to have some fun around the event and network a bit. Any tips on that?

I'll appreciate any reponses. Thanks in advance.

And Just to show, this is the stuff we're promoting:

First off, welcome to Austin!  Or soon anyways Smiley  It's a shame you can't make it to the IGS, I think we have some really good talks!

Second, my apologies if I go slightly offtopic or am too blunt, my goal is just to lay out some thoughts/ideas from my previous conference and business experience, not to be a condescending dick, but sometimes I cross the line and text-only internet postings tend to exacerbate this.  ANYWAYS:

I think going to a conference to "network" and "promote" a project is going to be stressful, annoying, and fruitless.
That sounds horrific right?  There are exceptions of course - if you have a booth or have been nominated for a contest or festival, that is a whole other game.  Also, this doesn't mean you shouldn't bring some promo materials or even better a netbook and iPhone so you can show off your stuff if somebody is interested.

However, I think if you make this the goal of your trip you will just end up stressed out and disappointed.  Bring your stuff in case you meet somebody cool and you just genuinely would love to hear some feedback.  But don't go into this thing with the whole like "I'm gonna find somebody here who I will impress with my game and then we will do business!!" ...it'll just wreck the trip for you.  I promise!

Meet new people, make some friends, be prepared, and have fun!!  Enjoy the city and its surroundings, check out some nice restaurants, and just enjoy yourself.  You'll be much more likely to make a good impression on important people if you're just there chilling out and taking interest in what's there instead of what you brought with you anyways.

Oh of course I'll enjoy Austin. It's not like I'm not going to see the sights anyway. Whatever happens, the trip WILL be worth it I think. But yes, I'm going there mainly to see if I can find someone interested in this, to start to network. Thanks for the tip! I'm actually well prepared to not find anything fruitful, but Then again you have to try everything you can.

And knowing people there would be great. I'd love to see other independent creators and THEIR projects too. Although I have the notion that they'll Lynch me for not having even booted up ever a copy of Cave Story.
