This is going to be my rapid dev log for Harvester, my Ludum Dare project. The basic gist is that you're one of a race of celestial beings. You're exploring a cave looking for a certain something. I won't say any more than that, because I don't want to spoil it. Wink

So far it generates maps based on an array, the player can move, you won't move through walls, and there's even a really crude illumination system. Here's a screenie of my progress so far (for the record, I started about fifteen minutes after Ludum Dare started, so this is at the less-than-two-hour mark):

Hm...is that certain something Christina Ricci?

if not, it should be.  Coffee

The purple player (I think that's what it is) think looks almost exactly like the desktop icon for Osmos, except more translucent and the Osmos icon is blue.

Progress is slow but steady! This is turning into a dungeon-crawler/CCG. Updates:

--you can now collect keys and use them to open chests
--chests each give you a soul, chosen at random
--you can display your soul collection by hitting "D"
--you can initiate duels with other harvesters
--there's now some rather nice, eerie music accompanying you as you journey through the caves

I hope to have the combat system up and running before the end of the competition tomorrow. I also hope to make the souls have unique abilities useful for solving puzzles, but that might take too long to implement before the deadline. One screenie before sleepy-time:

I just looked up Osmos to see what you were talking about, and I don't think they look all that similar. But thanks for the heads up. Smiley

Oh, and yeah, Christina Ricci: Well, hello there! Hand Thumbs Up Right

Updates:

--your souls each now have special abilities that can come in handy in certain places.
--work continues on the battle engine; it might not be done in time, which would stink, but I can only work so fast. Sad

Oh, I just said that as a side note. I did not mean to imply you ripped it or anything.

I hope the battle engine gets done in time! I can't wait to see what it is/how it plays out. But if not I think the puzzles/souls/dialog would still make it wonderful. I wish you all the luck, of course.

Thanks! I've actually thought up something rather interesting with the battle engine that should significantly reduce the work I have left to do on it, though it does make it more art game-y (and it's already kind of borderline on that front). Smiley I do believe this game is going to be done in time for the competition.

Woohoo, it's done! Tears of Joy Phew. That was one frenzied development schedule. It's finished, though, and I'm actually really proud of it. It's very story-driven, I'll say that much.

Here's the official Ludum Dare page for Harvester, and here are some download links:

The game has been updated:
--the character can no longer see through walls;
--in-game timer displays correctly;
--the game should now always be complete-able;
--various bugs fixed;
--main character moves more fluidly;
--small graphical updates;
--some clarifying instructions added to the game.

As this is no longer the version I submitted to Ludum Dare, it has a new file name. DOWNLOAD the latest version here:

Windows-only: http://www.sinisterdesign.net/Downloads/Harvester.exe

Windows/Mac/Linux: http://www.sinisterdesign.net/Downloads/Harvester.air
