Yea it prints a little epitaph to your tweet...stream...feed....thing e.g. "I ran 9000m before crashing into a wall and tumbling to my death"

Here are a bunch of numbers from today!

Unique visitors to my server today: 100,000+
Hits on the Canabalt page: 150,000+
Hits on my homepage: 10,000+
Hits on Newgrounds today: 16,000+ (put up in the afternoon, but Tom frontpaged it)
Rating on Newgrounds: 4.4/5
Hits on Kongregate today: 800+ (NOT frontpaged, and doesn't include the Kong API yet)
Rating on Kongregate: 3.8/5
Attempted ArmorGames Uploads: 6
Successful ArmorGames Uploads: 0
Total Donors: 20
Total Donations: $80
Epitaph Tweets: Hundreds (thousands?  5-10 per minute since they were added)
Hilarious Emails on a Variety of Topics: Dozens (DUDE YOU SHOULD MAKE THIS FOR IPHONE)

Also, on my homepage's links there is a direct linear relationship between the number of visits and the height on the page.  Links at the top get a few thousand, by number 4 or 5 down the list it is in the low hundreds/high tens.

At Jim's request, I added high scores to the Kong version of Canabalt; their API is super easy to use, so I just made a flixel wrapper for it.  That will be included in the next public along with the donation & syndication visor, but I've also made it available immediately on the help forums if people want to mess with it before then.  It's easy and awesome!

If you're open to experimentation on turning a profit, try micro-transactions (users can buy different costumes, areas etc).
No one's made a profit through donations (I guess people consider it cyber-panhandling?), whereas paying for extra content is a proven model only now catching on in the Flash market.

After this was posted at the MochiAd's forum the conversation took a bizarre twist when some random guy claimed he could have made the game in 5 hours...

My brother says:
"[The guy] kind of looks like Michael Jackson."

I thought the exact same thing. He reminds me of the character from the moonwalker game.

edit: Wow that guy is an ass in the mochiads thread!

have we forgotten about langdell?

All things considered, the game could be made in 5 hours. Assuming you're using flixel already, and know exactly how the game is to play out, and have each and every graphic pictured in your head, don't make mistakes, have this one as a reference, and get it perfect on the first try.

And yet somehow I doubt it'd have the same charm

He did make a game in 8 hours, though - Foosball DX.

However, he himself manages to prove, with that game, that you can't really make a polished game within 5-8 hours;
that foosball game has prerendered graphics, technotrance loops, and no charm at all.

Very very nice, highly polished, very fun, I'm with the "I dislike playing just to beat my score" crowd, and I would find this game a lot more fun if I felt there were objectives to accomplish. I also feel like the game has one big glaring flaw in that I feel like I'm being encouraged to slow down rather than speed up, that just feels kind of... off, also the fact that I have to hit the crates in order to accomplish that feels weird, but that's probably just the result of the one button gameplay, there is of course only so much you can do with one button... but of course that's the point.

I knocked off the 5000m achievement on Kong Smiley Fun game, has a little more depth than you'd expect given how simple it seems. If the level layout were hand-designed it could probably go quite a bit deeper though...

However, he himself manages to prove, with that game, that you can't really make a polished game within 5-8 hours

I think the operative word here is "polish." You can knock up the "buildings are generated and the guy jumps from one to next running into crates and stuff" concept in an hour or two. But then:

-Animated character
-Sound effects
-Different building types
-Different building art
-Background art and animation
-Title screen and restart game UI
-Particle effects
-Tuning/balance
-API integration
-Complete platformer collision, vs. pure "touch the wall and you're dead." I think Flixel provides this, but the point is that the latter is the minimum necessary for gameplay, and the former is what the game actually has.

At various points along this lengthy list of polish items, the game's quality goes up, but it's hard to say exactly where and when.

I'm genuinely interested to find out how the begging is going (as somebody who usually puts ads and sponsor logos in the front of his games). The game must have been played millions of times by now!

(if you feel like sharing it, that is)
