currently I'm using 1and1, i got a year of free hosting from them but i am finding them to be very unreliable. First the FTP has so many problems, for one when i upload the contents to my site it wont show up still. next they limited my joomla, they dont allow me to install my own template which got me mad. so I'm thinking this isn't worth it, I'd rather have a host that is easier to work with that doesnt involve me spending the last few months trying to work with it. Anyone know a good host for someone thats on a budget? something that will give me a good deal for a year?

It's certainly not budget-friendly...not really, but I've had plenty of good times with Bluehost. I'm only paying maybe $40 a year for the domain+hosting and I haven't run into a bandwidth issue or lack of installed frameworks or anything like that.
In fact, I'm quite pleased with them thus far. Certainly better *AND* cheaper than GoDaddy.
THIS POSTER IS AN IDIOT FOR BELIEVING SUCH LIES

I can agree about BlueHost. Very good service, and very cheap.

im pretty satisfied with dreamhost and so are others here on the forumsi signed up with the normal 120$ / year (but only paid 9.24$ for a whole year because of a special offer) but since i get a good amount of daily traffic i decided to switch to a virtual private server in order to provide a stable site. ...another host which seems to be good is hostgator (havent tested it yet personally but heard good things about it) i just made screenshots straight from the webpanel of the 1 click installs they provide (i use wordpress and can fully customize it so i assume it will be the same with joomla)

thanks i was looking at bluehost and hostgator. hostgator asks a lot unless u buy 3 years but for 1 year its about $100 if i remember. and i would like to get a year cheap to test to see if i'll like it or not. The one problem i have with my webhost is they dont give me all the rights from the 1 click installation. mostly the installations of my own templates and themes. then they make it difficult to even install things using ftp.

i think its something like the easy mode at dreamhost where they handle the stuff for you and you cannot install other themes etc. as said i choosed the advanced mode for the wordpress installation and can customize it.

I use HostGator and it works fine for me, though I didn't use the auto-install tools for wordpress, I just setup wordpress myself considering how easy it is. I figure if I can build web tools and customize my own site's layout, I can handle installing blogging software . That all said, I don't really do much special stuff on my server, nor do I get a lot of traffic so for all I know things could be bad if I were actually popular.

I think this depends on your priorities. Some hosts are very reliable, some are very fast, have excellent control panels, or have great support. Of course, they usually sacrifice in some area also. The trick is to decide on your priorities and pick a host on that basis.
I can say that pair.com has amazingly responsive support staff and decent scores across the board elsewhere.

obligatory mention of the superlative http://nearlyfreespeech.net -- pay as you go hosting. it can get expensive if you have a popular site, but if your site is small it's very inexpensive and great

One thing to watch out for with NearlyFreeSpeech if you're planning a web-app, is that they've got very very few Apache modules installed. In fact it's pretty much just mod_php. Hope you like PHP. Or CGI. *gag*
That said, they're hosting my static site and it's all been smooth sailing. Can't beat the price for a low traffic site.

A lot of people hate on Dreamhost, but I use them for my personal blog and haven't had any major problems. Support was decent during outages, and I generally have more than enough freedom to work on their servers. Performance isn't great, but it's not terrible either. Of course, it's dirt cheap and they're always pushing out promos for new sign ups.
Postscript: If you're building a site in Rails, heroku.com is pretty much the best thing since the invention of the wheel. Hosting starts at the price of free (5mb storage limit), and with that you get one-click deployments and a tremendously knowledgeable support staff.

I think for hosting, new hosting company isn't good. In my experience godaddy or hostgator are the best option for hosting your site. Most of the new hosting company are fraud, their service isn't good.

you later mentioned that bluehost deleted your site cause they claimed it had been hacked, right? does this change your opinion of them?

Hell yes Paul. Hell yes.
Good call on that man, let me recant my previous statement with a substitution.
