Arcade games (or games following the arcade philosophy) are generally very repayable, I haven't completed one yet.  Just look at the indie game Spelunky for example.
Arcade games are the perfection of game marketing. One coin one play.
If the game isn't addictive, no more coins. If the game doesn't grab you from the first coin, no more coin. If the game doesn't generate revenue, arcade owner return the board or stop purchasing it.

I had a pretty negative impression on this game, I mean come on it's a arcadey flash game revolving around the same gameplay mechanics with really simple retro graphics, and according to some people's comments, it only lasts around 2 hours, no way this is worth 15$.

How wrong I was.

Over rated or not, this game is great on it's own merit, I don't recall having so much fun with a indie game in such a long time.  Hand Thumbs Up LeftSmiley

Just cause I don't have the time to read the whole thread, what do I get when I buy VVVVVV?

Is it a download or is an online thing? I'm quite tempted to chuck my money in, because I really like decent indie games (Machinarium, Braid and Osmos were all definitely worth my money and good research for my job). But I worry that I might be chipping in for something I can't sit and play with offline.

It amuses me that the retraux look of VVVVVV causes some outrage at the cost. I'm developing a free Flash game myself, but I'm considering implementing DRM just for the fuck of it. A free game that you can't copy - you can only download it.

On the other hand, they can tend towards being unfair so you don't play for half an hour on that one coin.

Which may relate to my thoughts on VVVVVV... I played through the demo and while the gameplay was interesting and developed well I didn't really like how punishing it was. The graphics, music and gameplay were just enough to keep me playing.

A little thinking leads me to believe I like when there's more than "Pass/fail". For example nethack has many levels of failing. Surprisingly, the greatest is not death. Even something like World of Goo... your building can partially collapse instead of being totally destroyed. Many games seem to have something like this, but VVVVVV doesn't.

On the other hand, the mechanic where you always take a few bullets and it's just a question of how many often sucks too. If you can take 30 hits in a section and your skill means you'll take a minimum of about 27 you end up knowing you're screwed before it even happens, over and over again.

Curse you, moi. Every time someone links to TV Tropes, I lose another hour of my life.

I'm enjoying VVVVVV in small doses, so that it doesn't tempt me into into trying for Doing Things the Hard Way. That said, the pass/fail of VVVVVV is why I enjoy it. I play a lot of "lots of options" games, and I enjoy them a lot, but VVVVVV is nice for a change. It has a specific demand. When I meet it, it plays nice sounds and colors and everyone smiles. It's like Mega Man.

That, and I die so often it provokes the thought that if I was playing with a friend we could easily be trading the controller back and forth, laughing at each other, and spilling beer on the couch.

I finally managed to get a V rank in the Laboratory time trial. It took me wayyy too long to figure out that there's a trick to making it through the bottom part of I'm Sorry...

Just have to get the last level now!

I hate this game. I hated this game so much that I bought it, beat it, bought the soundtrack, and am now going to buy the game for two friends. I'm really pissed off!
