greetings

I am currently a second year student of game design and development at the utrecht school of arts in holland. Third year is internship, and I want to go somewhere not in holland!
Preferably somewhere were they speak english, but I can manage german and french.

Anyway, does anyone have suggestions for small but cool companies? Not 100+ people working on games, and making exciting games. I'll have to start emailing people soon to see if I can get in anywhere. Smiley

Good question. How far do you want to travel? Do you want to stay in Europe? I don't have any places that comes to mind right now but if I do, I'll give you a sign. Smiley

I'll go anywhere! As long as there is no war/crazy virus/whatever and I don't have to learn a new language.

Something not in the Netherlands? Only leaves like 150 countries  Tears of Joy
I would advise that you look for a company in the EU, cause getting a VISA for internships is a pain in the ass. Your internship will take 6 months I hope?

http://www.gamedevmap.com/

Is a resourceful site, even if it does not cover all developers. Some stuff I experienced:
Germany:
Can be divided into three game development areas. Berlin (capital), Hamburg and southern Germany. Berlin hosts some unknown small game developers and your main competition here are students from the 'games-academy'. Hamburg has a lot of game devs who do browser games. Southern germany got some bigger developers with +100 developers but that ain't your soup Smiley

I (partly) disagree. As an EU citizen it shouldn't be difficult to get a visa to places outside of the EU. I'm from the UK and worked in Hong Kong for my placement over the last year. I had no issues with my visa and know lots of people who worked abroad for their intern-ship who also had no issues. As long as you don't have a dodgy past and the company your applying to is willing doesn't have an issue with it (some companies do) then it should all go through fine.

I also found that being foreign actually made me far more desirable, but I was working for a large international company. A small company might see it differently.

Well, only thing I know that there is a lot of Ubisoft in Düsseldorf here in Germany and they last time I checked they had a LOT of job openings, so they might take an intern.

It's a fair distance from Holland, too.

Might not quite meet the "small company makes cool games" criteria though.

Here at Starbreeze (in Sweden) we take interns quite often, but we no longer meet your below 100 people requirement though.
