Well, I just got a DS because my girlfriend rocks and I was sitting here thinking of some good games to get eventually. There are the obvious choices: Mario Kart, Metroid, Castlevania, Contra etc...but I am wondering what are some good, lesser known DS titles that I might want to keep an eye out for?

The only one I can think of is Contact - not really that obscure, but little-known enough to be mentioned. It's a wonderful little game.

ElectroPlankton seems like a good one to mention right about now.

Get the Japanese version of Electroplankton, if you can. Awesome packaging.

All the Phoenix Wright games are very good, but not too obscure.
I'll also put in my approval of Electroplankton as well, however be aware that it is not exactly a "game" persay, but rather a set of freeform musical toys.
I also recommend Hotel Dusk: Room 215, Trace Memory, Picross DS, and Lost in Blue (1 and 2).

I don't think it's really obscure, but Meteos. Really great puzzling. I forced this game onto my friend and bought it for them. Whether they like it or not.

I really enjoyed Sprung, though apparently nobody else did. Also, if you spot a copy of the GBA game "Ninja Cop", get it

I really like Elite Beat Agents (There's also Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan, which came before it, but I have never played it.) I'm sure most people have heard of it, but it's still awesome.

I liked Boktai a lot more then Lunar Knights, but then, atleast I didn't suffer from short term memory loss and terrible sun burns from playing it for too long.

Super Princess Peach isn't exactly obscure, but it is criminally under-appreciated. Come on, new super mario bros was okay at best and Yoshis Island DS is an absolute disgrace to the SNES original and one of the worst games I've played in a long time.
You'll be surprised at how solid and fun Super Princess Peach is.

I got to play Picross at a download station, good stuff. I'll probably pick it up if I can find a used copy. On another note: damn those infernal download stations, I thought that you could actually download the demos and then leave Oh well...I can't wait for the Everybody's Nintendo Channel on the Wii: DS demos at home! Anyone played Dementia yet? I heard it was pretty good....

I guess Etrian Odyssey is kind of obscure (and rare), but if you can find it, it's an abusive and angry traditionalist CRPG-style RPG. You'll love it.

EBA FTW! Also the DS has my favourite version of Mario Kart. We had regular 8 player games at my work for a while. Flerpin' brilliant!

I like PW, but you need to get used to the anime logic in the courtroom. But I really like how they mixed adventure/hidden object gameplay with IF (for the lack of a better word). Bought Lunar Knights - let's see if you guys were right
