Seasons of Change

My Waffle

Okay so I figured I'd take a little bit of a break from Journal to put in an entry for this competition. Without a more stringent theme my natural reaction is to make some sort of adventure / interactive narrative so that's what I'm doing. To keep with the spirit of the competition I've decided to use a selection of my favourite art submitted to create a game with a bunch of different styles of story and feel.

The Game

Seasons of Change will be a set of separate short tales all thematically linked and accessed in any order you wish from an overworld. Each story will be its own interactive adventure with a unique art and sound style.

Assets Used

Using Art:
Andrius' Cut n'Paste Detective (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9437.0)
Dineyin's Asset Repository (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9052.0)
Sar's Bichatse! (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8808.0)
Arachne's Skulls and Stuff (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9147.0)
hammedhaaret's Rabbits (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9276.0)
Markham's Art (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8956.0)
ixis Organ House Assets (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9214.0)
pgil's plethora of pretty pixels (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8796.0)

Using Music/Sounds:
Craig Stern's Song / Sound Buffet (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=8844.0)
SOS's Music genres fair (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9296.0)
BigLon's Thread o' Stuff (http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=9048.0)

Progress

The game is now finished, the competition version has some problems and bugs in it but the post competition version is much improved.

For the post-competition version I made some minor tweaks to the artwork so they fit the game better. Forbidden by the rules of the comp but allows some improvements to the game I couldn't do within the boundaries of the competition version.

I respect anyone who can speak either pronunciation of the word, because I'm pretty sure I am not affiliated with either.

Making good progress with this. Overworld (Knight) is done, World 1 (Detective) is done and now working on World 3 (Caves). Hoping to get all 4 worlds complete by the weekend. So can start working on the interactive story.

Need to start seriously thinking about sound and music too.

Interesting concept.

Don't forget world five, which mixes the elements from the first (number of worlds) worlds so the (number of heroes) heroes can defeat (villain) to recover (macguffin).

hahah, thankfully the overworld feature no villians and no macguffins. I did think about bringing all the characters together at the end but can't find any decent reason to do it so I won't.

Slow progress over the weekend with friends over for an early christmas meal but finished off three of the four areas now, and just started on the final world using the lovely rabbit assets. Posted a screen shot in the opening post.

Next week need to work on the story and sound.

According to forum timer I've got a little over an hour. Dammit. Been at this all day in a proper crunch mode. Well I should have something near finished out in time for the deadline but this thing really needs another couple of days of testing and polish. I guess the competiton version will be my beta.

Hey, I like what you have so far! I think the platform mechanics could definitely use some tuning, but as far as the overall concept I think it's pretty great.

Thanks. I threw it up in the feedback forum to get some additional notes on improvements and the feedback I the other commenter said the same.

I'm planning to wait for a bit more feedback and do some revisions and changes for a final post-competition public version.

I tried this, missed world 2 and went straight to the caves. Got annoyed by the jumping physics, but managed to get to the guy you "fight". Giant yellow star appeared. Pressed right. Invisible character fell down about 12 floors. Got stuck on rocks.

I prompty rage quitted :D.

Interesting idea but yeah you just need to test through it. And I really hate the physics. Extreme gravity is always frustrating to me. But that might just be personal.

I've made a lot of improvements to the post-competition version, will check for the bug during the star cutscene. Sorry you had such a bad time with it.

This game was really cool. I liked the story a lot. However, there were some things that marred the experience. In particular, the platforming physics - well, I don't want to sound rude, but they were really horrible. The way the screen bobs up and down every time you jump is headache-inducing, and the painfully short time you spend in the air makes it very hard to get the timing right during the cave level. I didn't really see why you needed to include a coin-collecting level anyway, since the rest of the game was basically a passive, art-game-y affair.
Another thing was that your text boxes would sometimes cut off letters at the edge, so for example, the guy at the end says "Come with me to next word" when in fact I'm pretty sure it was meant to be "come with me to the next world".

All griping aside, I thought the story (especially the bunny segment) was great, and the use of art was very smartly done.

Liked: The story was nice. The different styles worked well together.

Disliked: I feel the jumping should have been softer, and there should have been some give in the scrolling so it didn't jar up and down when I jumped.

Conclusion I think more of an 'art game'. Interesting to play through though.
