Aw. I was gonna go back and get to that cave, but the game seems to be down. Probably just maintenance.

Edit: Got in. Died. Respawn is broken, I think. I died fighting the first skelly I saw.

Here is the latest update.

  • added items and looting
  • combat totally redone to account for weapon effects
  • friendly NPCs no longer attackable (poor little doggy *snif*)
  • friendly NPCs will now help you if they are nearby
  • put limit on fireball range to 3 tiles
  • MOBs get angry at you and don't forget
  • fixed respawn problems
  • you now lose one level when respawning instead of losing everything

The game may be a little bit too hard for solo players.  Let me know if its too brutal.  However, it is a multiplayer game after all.  If you are getting frustrated with deaths, try some different tactics.

Coming soon...
  • new spells
  • lots of maps and new mobs
  • something to spend all those shiny new coins on
  • evil player team?  (maybe)

Very cool proof of concept, but one more vote from me that the pace of the game is just too slow.  Maybe that's intentional to counter-balance the latency, but the pace just doesn't compare to Wrath of a Mad God.  Maybe that's the superiority of Flash. :?

In any event, I also found it odd that I had to manually untarget corpses and turn off auto-attack.  It seems like once my target is dead that should just happen.  Other than that, keep up the good work.  Looking forward to see it develop further!

(It was equally odd to be able to target my own corpse once I died before respawning.)

Oh... and I agree. I want to kill the dog. Wink

  • Visiting an inn now binds you there (you respawn there)
  • Some AI improvements

I'm enjoying the latest version. I like what you've done with the inn, and Sally the barkeep. Her asking after the dog made me think it would be cool if you could go get the dog and bring it to her. Maybe she could give you a leash for the dog (like in Nethack, if you've played that). And when you finally reunite dog and owner, you could get some sort of reward.

Um... actually, I see there's only 24 hours until the deadline, so ignore everything I just said. I'm pretty impressed with the amount of content you've managed to get in there since the New Year. It's just a shame the server's so slow.

I would love to put quests in but alas I will run out of time.  Is the deadline tonight (Sat) or tomorrow night (Sun)?  Erk... I spent much of last night playing the game instead of developing it, doh!

Thanks for the love Smiley  I could experiment with cutting the latency down but I am afraid my host would kick me for DOS-attacking my own website.  The server is already starting to choke when there are lots players on.  I think I am hitting the limits of using html-javascript as a network client (at least on my cheapo server).  Its been a very interesting experiment, though.

Right now I am working on an evil player team, more zones, mobs, and items.  Hopefully I will get in an update tonight.

Latest Update:

  • Team eeeeevil.  Three new evil characters available.  Dragon priestess, masked black mage of mystery, and ogre warrior of questionable hygeine
  • New zones and MOBs for evil team
  • Made level one MOBs easier to curtail the ongoing newbie slaughter.  They now forget to use their weapons until level 2.
  • Balance adjustments (ie nerf time!)

Coming soon...
  • PvP zones
  • Final content push till the deadline!
  • New zones, items and MOBs
  • Something to spend those coins on
  • Casting MOBs (probably not gonna happen)

*side note* Huge thanks for the feedback I have gotten in-game and out.  This game would have been unplayable without it.   Beer!

If you could axe Guion, I'd appreciate it.  Scarvye is my knight as well, and I created him before good / evil were introduced.  If that matters for stats and such, axe him, too.  Smiley

I sure hope I didn't break anything.

Final Update:
  • Added PvP and cooperative play between teams (3rd NPC team)
  • Added 7 new zones
  • Fixed some UI bugs

Didn't make it (got work tomorrow):
  • Casting MOBs
  • Nothing to spend money on
  • Not much usage of my cool NPC scripting engine
  • I'd need another month to add all the content I wanted

I got frustrated with my horribly slow host so I moved the game to Google Apps.  It is here now...

I hope that doesn't violate any contest rules.  I made no changes to the game content.  I did have to modify the server slightly to work on Google Apps but the changes are nothing the player would ever notice.

It seems much more responsive now, in any case.  If this goes against the rules I guess I would accept disqualification because it was nearly unplayable on my old host.

Awesome, does speed things up (even if the pace of gameplay is still a little slow). I had a level 8 fighter with awesome gear but forgot about my window being open and was killed by a level 1 skeleton.  It would be nice if some sort of auto-retaliation was worked in after judging to avoid situations like that.  Tongue

In any event, I now have a level 7 fighter and am working on regaining that level on the new server. Wink

Hmm, and fwiw, I can no longer pick things up from enemy corpses (even though I have an open inventory slot and equipment slots), and I lost all of my armor... did that happen in the migration?  Sad day...
