Okay. So run with this for a second. You're like this guy who owns a boat. And on this boat you have one of model of every electronic instrument to ever come out. Ok? No wait, you got 2 of each, so it's more like noahs ark. Okay but the problem is your boat is sinking and you need to get to the nearest deserted island in your dingy like yesterday. So you can only grab one thing. So if you could have any electronic instrument but be stuck with only that forever, what would you take? Discuss. A computer is a wussy answer btw

I don't care if it's a wussy answer: computer. It's not even a contest.
If that weren't an option, though, I'd probably pick a high-end synth with built-in sequencing capabilities. (It's more about being able to compose for me than it is about being able to play an instrument.)

This was going to be my reply. Word for word. How many instruments can you play video games on when you get bored? Name me one, and I *might* change my answer.

Sure. But even if a computer had nothing but sequencers, sample libraries, and other audio programs on it, it would be a far more flexible, user-friendly, and full-featured instrument for putting together songs than anything else.

That's Iannis Xenakis's UPIC. It was a digital synthesis system developed in the 80's that lets you compose electronic music by drawing on a touchscreen. The lines represent the amplitude (thickness), timbre(shape) and pitch of the sounds. It doesn't have much to do with photosounder because its focus isn't about converting existing images into sound. Here's a pretty good software clone (whose development I was kinda-sorta semi-involved with): http://highc.org/Also, I'd like to say that "a computer" is an incredibly lame answer. Be creative, people.

Actually, I've never tried to use ARSS on images that I didn't create specifically for the purpose of running them through ARSS.
HighC looks pretty awesome though, thanks for the link!
And I wish the sugarbeard had stated his criteria a little more clearly (does he want it for performances?). Given the existing criteria, a computer is definitely the best answer.

I made a whole album of strange noise vignettes in an early version of HighC and the creator liked it so much he gave me a free license. We then had a few talks via email concerning upcoming features (which is the extent of my "involvement"). http://www.archive.org/details/C.a.Sinclair-SnapshotsA computer might be the best choice, "rationally" speaking, but there are so many electronic instruments that are way "cooler" than computers, like modular analog synths, or Raymond Scott's Electronium.

I'd want my first (cheap) guitar with an amp that has tons of pre-set distortions and effects and the like. Give me that and an unlimited supply of cassette tapes to record onto and I'm golden.

A lifeboat. It's debatable whether or not it's an instrument (you could use it as a drum), but let's face it, I want a good, reliable escape vessel.
But aside from that, how about a piano? A nice big beautiful grand piano for me to play on. Heck, if I can afford the boat, I most certainly can afford the piano. Or, if it's strictly "electronic-only", a keyboard equivalent. Korg M3 maybe?
And then I can write out sheet music in the sand. Eventually somebody'll send a chopper to rescue me, and the wind will wipe out all my work, but it won't matter, since I will have memorized it all. I mean, a guy's got nothing better to do...
(I might also smuggle a copy of "The Idiot's Guide to Singing and Not Subsequently Sucking" in the piano's cavity. Could come in handy)
