September 03 2012

OLD
So I just announced this, this morning and thought I'd start one of these devlog-y thingies.

For those of you who haven't played Super Puzzle Platformer, you can play the original here.

From the announcement -
"Now I’d like to finally announce that SPP is evolving into a whole new beast, with multiplayer, levels, new obstacles, unlockable characters, and lots of other shit."

Here are some of the most recent screenshots:

The Characters

The game is also to have a line-up of characters that i'll be announcing periodically throughout the development of the game -

each character will have his own unique special ability to help destroy blocks.

The game is being built in XNA with programming, art and design by myself and music by Landon Podbielski.

I'll be updating this thread whenever I have something worth showing you guys and until then I'd like to hear what you think!

Cheers

Some things I think might be interesting to cover here, in the near future:
- Mode7 (which I'm using in some of the backgrounds)
- pixel shaders
- I'd also like to share images and ideas from other games that influence the choices I make for this game
- and if I don't have anything else I'll probably just post animated gifs of gameplay or something like that.

If there's anything else you want to hear about let me know.

Mmmm, lovely, I really liked the original one. Really interested to see what you do with multiplayer, because that felt like what the game really needed. Would bring back memories of Wario's Woods for sure.

Nice blend of concepts! At first I thought it would play like Mr.Driller, but Super Puzzle Platformer is a different thing! Great game!

SPP is good fun, I've spent a lot of slow Friday afternoons at work playing this and The Heart Is Safe. I always die when the rows start falling.

Same here, tried SPP today and it was fun but lacked something to keep me hooked. I think unlockables, levels and multiplayer will do the trick Smiley
I just hope it will be platform independent enough to run on Linux and lightweight enough to run on my netbook.

Wario's Woods and Mr Driller are two (of many) big influence for this game for sure! I'm often thinking of ways to drop homages to them within the game.

I'm still glad I got the original for Mac. It's really fun and super slick.

Did you ever get Apple to take down the clones of your game?

Feedback on the new screens:

I'm guessing that the temple ruins graphics are a WIP, because right now they are too "muddy"... something with the darkest shades of brown, I'm guessing... either too much of them, or too low contrast. The cracks in the stones also seem too thick, and same for a few pixels on the spikes... but I'm guessing nothing is cleaned up or tweaked yet?

As always, crossing my fingers for a Mac version! If you can get a Linux version going too, this would definitely be Humble Bundle quality stuff (hmm... first time I've used that as a benchmark... hopefully it will come across as a good thing). Smiley

They took it down, yes. Then it came back, then it went away again.

Right, nothing is cleaned up or tweaked yet, anything is bound to change to some degree at this point. Thanks for the feed back, I really appreciate it.

Mac and Linux are definitely on my todo list! I also want to look into the Chrome web deal. PC first though.

So consider this official day one of devblogging. Let the madness commence!

DevLog 01

First here’s some super awesome fanart by Luc @ crayonpapier

Second, I’ll point out some key things that have been changed/added since the announcement:

The Cape

The cape is something I keep coming back to and tweaking here it is in it’s current state:

I think it looks a lot better in motion, but certainly will be going through some more tweaks. My main influence for the cape have been the shinobi games.

Some other things changed/added since the last announcement:

  • Rough character select screen (I would show a picture but it would contain spoilers  Noir)
  • 2 and a half playable characters now
  • Multiplayer functionality
  • countless other minor and not so minor things

And lastly, here's a sneak peak at one of the new characters/outfits:

(each outfit change comes with a different power and ability)

ANYWAYS

Devlog 02

here's some letters and words...

of course these are only the first 10, the best, most colorful words are yet to come.

They pop up on the side of the screen Devil May Cry style like this:

Slick? people still say slick right?
