Humqn Fishbowl

Is a project I've been working on for awhile now and thought it was about time I started a DevLog for it to keep track of the progress.

Hard to explain but it's an experimental game where you interact with the figure. Different body parts and interactions cause different animations to play. There'll be more to it but for now I'll keep it simple.

Progress so far 20-08-2015:
-Have swipes and taps working on different body parts
-29 different animations completed so far

Progress so far 20-12-2015:
-38 animations done

Progress so far 29-01-2016:
-42 animations and a partially working mobile

This is a neat little webtoy. Is there anything behind the title, humqn?

@ryansumo Thanks.

The title Humqn is actually a little play on the guy not being completely human which you find out as you interact more with them.

Looks rad!

Reminds me a bit of this iPhone game that never saw the light of day.

Anyhow, looking forward to trying it out!

@Flink - Cheers hoping to release a little prototype in a month or two for people to try.  We'll see how much I can get achieved in that time now that I've started this devlog.

Also thanks for providing that YouTube link,  hadn't seen it before but can definitely see the similarities.

Currently working on a juggling animation for the hand swipe up. Will update with a gif this weekend to show the progress.

@thebarryman - thanks nice to hear that people want to see more.

Got a bit distracted this week trying to finish of a quick little fun animation for valentines day. Now that it's done I can go back to working on this.

Next one should be a yoyo animation I've been working on or a juggling animation I finished.

Nice! How is it animated actually? I can't quite tell if it's a 3d model or rotoscopy.

@microrignal - it's actually rotoscoped, but the issue is I'm filming as I go so I end up having to use other animation techniques to bring it all together.

@oldblood - thanks, always nice to hear. I actually just went through all of your devlog and really enjoyed reading it. It's got a unique voice and I'm interested to see more.

Work in progress for the yoyo animation. Need to hold the positions longer and colour in the yoyo but it's getting there.

Oddly mesmerizing. I watched that loop for longer than I should have. Are you doing all the motions for the rotoscoping yourself? If so, you're pretty good with a yo-yo...

You should go into more detail on your rotoscope process. It's not a practice we really see in games these days so it would be very interesting to read about how you're managing this process.

Loving these animations. MORE!

Would definitely love to hear more about your roto process. Curious to see how it compares to mine. In particular, I really wonder about that wobble effect -- is it procedural, or an artifact of your process? Whichever it is, it looks great!

Thanks guys, a great motivator knowing there's people interested in this.

The actions are all done by me so I'm constantly trying to come up with new moves. Have quite a few more planned that I still need to film and finally all the useless things I learnt growing up are coming in handy.

I will do a post going into more detail of my process later, just need to plan the best way to document it. I've been rotoscoping for a couple of years now so I think my process has improved to a point I'm happy with. The wobble effect is a result of my process. I redrew the idle animation every frame instead of reusing parts which gives it that effect.

Currently I'm working on a touch event bug on mobile which has me stumped. Wasted a day so far trying to fix it but can't seem to get it. If you use a tap action on a body part and then tap again off the character it counts it as a swipe from the last point of touch.

This project is on a little break for the moment while I work on trying to finish one of my old Ludum Dare entries which I'm thinking of starting a devlog for.

Will leave this juggling animation here to till I get back on this.

Little preview of something I've been working on. As you can tell I've been watching Game of Thrones.

@oldblood - don't mind if I do.

Want to start documenting my process more in this devlog now that I'm getting back into it.

Here's a little quick gif of the process I go into when colouring in the character so he can sit on the throne. I try and break it down into smaller quick tasks so in this case it meant throwing a strong background colour in (blue), then hovering over the hoodie with the mouse and clicking with the fill tool as I continually switch to the next frame with the keyboard. I do this process to the different body parts instead of staying on the same frame and colouring in the whole body at once. This is actually one of the only times I've done this so far in this project because there isn't usually a background.

Want to try and document my rotoscoping process also one of these days.
