Not for very long. I'm working on resurrecting the genre, at least on PC. Click link in my signature to see more.

Disclaimer: I don't like to advertise, but I was told that I have to in order for my game to be a success. Who knew!

well almost perfect emulation of n64 is coming

edit:

Well emulation AND enhance
(successfully generate Zbuffer so you can add things like DOF)

I'm really hyped for the new platformer from original Banjo-Kazooie creators. Will donate to their KS soon (YokaLeyle was the name of the game, I think?). Looks like I have some strong competition in 3D platforming genre, even when only considering low-poly, untextured 3d platformers, it seems. Doesn't matter, tho, if just one person will buy it, I'll be happy.

Be sure to check my game, link in the sig! See you around! Wink

As for N64 emu thing, I've always wondered why we can emulate perfectly newer systems (GC, Wii), but we can't emulate N64 well.

these enhancements actually look worse than the original imo. lacks cohesion (this is a problem with 99% of the "hd texture upgrades" ive seen)

The stuff in the distance looks good, but the smudged blurriness close to the camera is awful.

Playtonic's next stretch goal should be to fund Gimmy's gam.

also, like, just plopping HD textures onto low poly models doesn't work imo. just emphasizes how low poly they are makes everything look flat and disconnected from each other. this is a problem with the banjo xbla ports for instance (imo).

Its just bad colors, bad lighting, bad shapes. Wouldve looked bad on n64 hardware too.

I actually think the ugliest / cheapest part of that screenshot is the HUD.

oh actually thats mostly my bad, I thought you were commenting on yooka laylee.

Re: majoras mask -- kinda same, those hd textures are clownish as hell. The noisy photo-texture grey shadows on all the walls is not doing the artstyle any favors and neither are the terrible changes to the UI's palette.

compare instead to the original, note the density of detail and colors used.

MM3d provides a great example of how to upres it without fucking over all the art direction:

In conclusion: Your DOF/HD pack/whatever is ugly because you let inexperienced artists make assets for it, not cuz adding DOF or high res textures is a bad idea on its own.

Ya. Manages to somehow have colour without being too saturated for the mood of the game too, unlike that HD emulator thingy above.

otoh mm3d did a little more than just uprez the textures and add some effects haha.

but ya its kind of a thing with fanmade HD texture packs (and even professional hd remasters). often feels like theyre just "improving" the individual textures w/o giving any regard to how they actually look in a scene.

but uhhh anyway great news about the n64 emulation breakthrough

Yes I'm just pointing that it's now possible to have screen effect too now. There is some HD pack but I wasn't promoting them here, just showing the possibility of enhancement.
