Have you ever had an idea for a game that you want to create but that is way out of your league?

Here are a couple of my ideas that I won't follow up on:

  • A multi player tank game set in a winter landscape where tactics involve digging down, using forward observers and realistic artillery.
  • An mmorpg zombie survival game.
  • A side scroller where every level is synced to a different Astor Piazzolla recording.

You mean like Dwarf Fortress? Wink

And, robotacon: Astor Piazzolla sidescroller = WIN. Why is that out of your league? Sounds doable.

Definitely give it a try, it's absolutely unique. Be warned though, it has a very steep learning curve, so definitely consult the Wiki when you try it out. But it's probably the closest game in existence to what you described.

An mmorpg where instead of levelling, you get better equipment ala zelda, and the combat system depends on your class - like if you're a fighter you use a system sort of like a 3d fighting game, if you're a knight it's more like the 3d zeldas, if you're a mercenary, it's like a 3rd person shooter, etc. When two people go head to head it looks completely different for each of them. It's based in the distant future, and you can travel to thousands of planets, some only small, uninhabited meteors, others large bustling city-worlds, all of which can be fully explored. The cities are GTA-like, and you can go pretty much anywhere, get a car and drive all over, get into bar-fights, all that good stuff. The countrysides are inhabited by alien wildlife, some docile, some aggressive, all killable. Interplanetary travel is like a space sim, and you can customize your ship to be a small fighter or hire a crew to help pilot a massive star cruiser. You can buy and terraform planets and turn them into social hubs, or set up a government on them. The planets' resources are also limited and interactive (if you start a logging corporation on a small moon, the planet will eventually run out of wood, and where there was once a lush forest will now be wasteland). You can wage war on other planets, if you have an army large enough, and then it'll be like an RTS. Your generals will be other players, and certain ground units will be other players, too. It looks especially awesome when, during a fight for a planet, the players on the surface look up and see one of your massive starships parting the sky and casting a shadow over them all.  You can make money off of missions, or trade routes, or crafting items, or getting a job for a larger corporation. You can also become a space pirate. You can start your own corporation and hire other players to work for you. There are many playable alien races, some of which don't even resemble humans at all, some of which do, all of whom have their own cultures, practices, and languages.
So it's Spore+Zelda+GTA+Starlancer+Dwarf Fortress+Sins of a Solar Empire+Soul Calibur+Animal Crossing+Star Wars+Star Control+WoW+Savage
Oh, and it's looks just like Sparth's stuff, ingame.

edit: oh yeah, and to make sure not everyone's doing the same quests/missions, and that they don't get boring, players will be able to put up their own missions which then disappear once completed. Like a merchant-player not suited to fighting might need to put up an escort mission for a fighter to help them through a dangerous territory.
And also, terrain deformation.

I want to make a flight sim that ephasises riding wind currents and hiding in clouds over real world accuracy, and I want it in a steam punk world.

I have a few ideas for games but most of them are just "wouldn't that be cool?" type of things. Like a game where fighting is really intuitive. Like how you would imagine that the wii controller would work when fighting with a sword. So it takes real skill instead of exp to "level up".

Other types of games I've thought about is sort of like real life simulators. Where someone for example would play as a criminal and do a crime and then another player (as a police) would look for clues to capture the criminal. There are probably tons of flaws with this idea, but it's a fun thought to play around with.

Haha Xion, that has to be the greatest game of all time. I especially like the idea of people setting up their own missions.

Okay, my idea works like this. Game starts on a tile based turn based strategy kind of map. You have one base. Bases can build pilots and soldiers. Soldiers can build factories, as well as fight. Factories can build tanks, which have 3 different equipment slots (body, ground movement, weapon), and they can build unit carriers. Unit carriers can carry several units, and move two squares instead of one like everyone else. You can move any number of units on one square. Any battles will be available at the start of the turn.

The battles would take place on a 2D platformer view map. You control pilots, who in turn can control the tanks. They can also leave the tank at any time, Blaster Master style. You can only have one tank and one pilot out at a time, but you can exchange them at the beginning of the map. Any soldiers will be controlled by AI. So, you fight an enemy, until all the units die. I also think that if you abandon your tank, enemies can steal it if they spend some time hacking it.

Finally, pilots can gain experience/level up by being in battles, and you can upgrade tanks at factories.

Money to build stuff and upgrade tanks is given to you at some fixed rate per turn.

So it's sort of a combination of Starfox 2 or the DS version with Blaster Master with a strategy game.

Heh, I thought about creating a topic just like this one but I was too ... embarassed, I guess. But I do indeed have many 'dream games' I would make if I suddenly woke up to discover that I was Shigeru Miyamoto.

Foremost among them is probably a plan for a 'tourism-photography' game where you simply explore a world (presumably a fantasy one) and see what happens. The game would staunchly avoid any sorts of missions or objectives, save one, which is to fill your photo album. There are five different sections in the album: one for people, one for places, one for animals/plants, one for events, and one for photos you simply choose to save. The camera would have realistic settings such as aperture and focus, as well as a few gimmicky filters.
The events would be things that only happen at certain times of day, or certain days of the year.
By filling up your photo album, you can unlock items that allow you to travel to new parts of the world, or travel more easily. Under no circumstances would these items include any kind of fast-travel/warp item that completely eliminates any sense of exploration (yes, YOU, Twilight Princess  Angry )
What I think is best about this idea is that if you designed it well, it could be equally appealing to hardcore and casual gamers.

My dream game is actually about dreams. Tongue A dreamworld of sorts. I have mentioned it before a while ago. It's a game with slight jRPG leaning on the style of the Mana and Chrono games, but with very little if any focus on leveling. The gameplay would be based around the ability to alter reality around you in a crazy-ass fantasy dreamworld, which is something most inhabitants of that world can do to some extent. The world has a structured society based around the idea that everybody has some kind of power over reality around them (the main character would be a kind of person with a lot more potential than most other people). The story would focus on the nightmares that are invading this world and basically screwing with everything people like in there.

There would be a good deal of freedom in how you deal with situations and the choices you make, which would affect the path which the game takes in a lot more ways than just altering a few lines of dialogue in the ending sequence. The game would use a sort of emotion/personality based system for character progression as well.

You know, stuff.

wow, this actually lit something in my head! Shocked

(in short: shadow of the colossus in the sky)

Now i imagine a world where everything is floating in an infinte (?) sky. there are flying islands, ships, zeppelins.. a lot of steampunk Smiley (i love it)
you are a young guy and you fly around with your little aircraft (pretty much like a glider, small engine, big wings.. manuverability similar to the meheve from nausiica).
now. gameplay is focused on exploration, mood, clouds, atmosphere, flight (also Cloud comes to my mind http://intihuatani.usc.edu/cloud/)
you are very small, and places are very HUGE.
about enemies well.. i would say no small ones but, again, similar to SOTC:
HUGE ships, zeppelins, creatures etc..
you have to fly around (or even between and inside) them to find a way to kill(?)them.
everything is story driven, but with few dialogues. everything must be uhmm.. poetic.

wow, this would be the game of my life.
I have to do it.
(read: i have to find someone to do it for me, under my supervision Grin )

sorry for the rush of ideas! (and the poor english!)

That picture is awesome.

I had an idea for a co-operative platformer/action game. Two players would control a stone giant of sorts; one would move the torso, and the other would be the legs. So, the legs would need to make the giant run around (duh), and duck and jump as needed, while the torso could grab onto things and punch any enemies. It would have a large hub world where you and your buddy could just tool around, getting used to the control scheme (a bit like the castle in Mario 64), and various sections where they could run off to engage in various challenges- races against other giants and a combat arena were my initial ideas. I was considering focusing on the analog sticks for control, with the torso's control scheme somewhere between Fight Night and Katamari Damacy. Alas, 'tis but a dream...

This is probably out of everyone's league, and will probably stay that way forever, but..

I dream of a game that simulates the real world so accurately it is possible to build anything in game from things found in game, that is possible to make in the real world. We're talking about chemistry and physics, not limited by a number of pre-defined possible things to do but only the knowledge the players have of real-life science being the limit. Any kind of game could be placed in such a simulation, but what would be most awesome is a mmorpg world that starts out completely untouched by humans and it's up to the players to do whatever they want with the world.

The difference from real life would be the lack of truly adverse consequences of actions, the ability to have AI:s work after your instructions so that you can do grand projects. That, and general niceties of games like infinite reincarnation, no need for sleep, food and water and the ability to wage war without it being incredibly immoral etc.

I like to fantasize about how I first would establish a base in a hidden place, and going after fire and metals as fast as possible in order to create a military force able to defend against grievers running around (who would probably be using sticks and stones). After that I would indulge in science, seeing how complex things I could create with the help of what I've learnt in school and on wikipedia.

I have especially two games that i wanna make, both of them have been in developing and both have been put on hold.

The first is a adventure sci-fi game in the flashback/another world genre. Developed a prototype and then the "team" started to work on different companies. http://gameawards.se/images/show_preview/75

The other one is a small puzzle game that also was prototyped but then put on hold because team member moved away.

The bad thing about school projects is when the school ends and the project is not finished people often moves to different locations and it's hard to keep the workup over the internet.

Count me in!
